Indy with Ford Diagnostics

The old mans Mondeo was in for a service and was told that one of the diesel injectors was gone and it would be €750 to replace it.

I got him to bring it to an Indy I use near us and he said he couldn't see anything on his diagnostics machine however something might show up on a Ford specific one.

Is any Indy garage likely to have one? Ideally North County Dublin.

Does €750 sound reasonable for this job?

Is the car running ok was it just a routine service and they said it to you? Any warning lights on the dash?

I would like to know as well, need to reset xenon lights self levelling, it only can be done on ford specific software

I believe that's what he was told.

It was in for a routine service and when he went to pick it up they told him one of the injectors needed replacing and would be €750.

When it goes, the engine misfires, warning light comes up and then the engine cuts out.

Those are symptoms of faulty injectors allright but you wouldnt replace one injector to repair that fault you would either replace or recondition all four which is what you are being quoted for.

If its for one injector its daylight robbery so find out exactly what you are being quoted for.

Yep faulty injectors. Same thing happenend in my Focus, Ford will have the right diagnostics machine.
I replaced two injectors for about 600 euros. Car went 100% after that.

Thanks, will get him to ring them again and get confirmation of exactly what they are quoting for.

So I take it that the diagnostics machine to identify this issue is only in a Ford garage?

Your man in the Ford garage I went to said their machine is worth around 6/7 grand and alot of Indy will have a generic machanic. I went to my Indy when the problem happened and he got no fault code from the injectors.

You dont need any fancy equipment to diagnose this problem all you need is a set of bottles to do a leak off test.

You do however need proper diagnostic equipment if you replace the injectors as they need to be programmed to the vehicles pcm.

Thanks all, will pass him on the details.

Any decent independent garage will be equipped to deal with Ford injectors. You don,t need Ford specific diagnostics to read data or program injector calibrations.

IE, you don't have to go to the main dealer.

What year, model Mondeo is this?

The Indy he went to is very good, so would believe him when he said he couldn't see any issue when he plugged it in his machine. He didn't even charge him for looking at it. He just said as nothing came up he wouldn't be 100% what to fix.

    Is a 2010 Eco.

I took it up that it was a mk 3 mondeo for some reason this is a whole different ball game altogether.

Is it a 1.8 or 2.0 litre either way injectors dont really give trouble I would be very interested to find out what symptoms and fault codes was on the vehicle to bring about a diagnosis of faulty injector.

    It is a 1.8.

He is going to call to the Ford garage again and get some more details. He is also going to ring the place that mentioned in one of the earlier posts for a second opinion.

what was the original problem he was having with the car ? was it an intermittent starting problem by any chance? as a lad martin pointed out earlier these 1.8 and 2.0 rarely give injector problems un like earlier models

the reason i ask is the 1.8 does give starting problems in relation to the egr sticking and you dont get much change from 750 maybe he got his wires crossed

He would be driving along and you could hear the engine 'miss a beat', then the engine warning light would come on and then the engine would shut down. Luckily it had happened on quiet enough roads so he has been able to pull over, wait and then restart the car.
