    Hi All

I have just moved to Dublin for my job. I am trying to get back running after a while out for a number of reasons. I don't know Dublin that well, I am located in the centre of Sandycove, South Dublin I am doing 6-9mile runs, I have a car so would be willing travel a little to get away from the traffic. Would appreciate any suggestions.

    Thanks

You couldn't be in a better place to go running!! Seriously you don't need to drive anywhere. Just run down to the promenade and go left towards DunLaoghaire along the coast rd. You will find a pedestrian track there along the coastline towards the city centre.
Alternatively if you are feeling brave turn right towards the hills of Killiney, there is some great running there and the roads are very quiet.

If you need somewhere for speedwork there is a public cinder track in Kilgobbet park a few miles the other way (away from the coast).

Great place to live if you are a runner.

Spoiled for choice really. You have miles of coastline to the north, limited only by yourself. To the south you have Killiney and all it has to offer within about 2 miles.

Look up the dlrbay10k route on line, its in august and also Shanganggh park ideal during daylight, parking beside cemetary, hope good

    +1 to the above

    Just get out and run!
You will discover some gems - Sea level to the top of Killiney Hills around sunrise is one of my weekend staples these days, hard to beat on a clear day.

PS you're gonna need to love hills!;)

Straight down the coast & run both piers then down along the dart track to Seapoint.
Zig-zag your way up through Monkstown then before a good uphill run to Glenageary with a final nice downhill run back to Sandycove.

I do this every weekend = 10 miles

Echo the above, up to the top of Killiney Hill at sunrise is hard to beat.

By the time you get to obelisk, you will be shagged but rewarded with a lovely view!

Another nice one if you want a long flat one is to run to the lighthouse at the pigeon house. Then back to Sydney Parade dart station and hop on it home.

+1 on all of the above, a great place to run. If you're planning a long run you can also take advantage of the public water fountains at Seapoint and Killiney.

Where are these public water fountains you speak of?!!? HATE carrying water with me.

There's also a tap at Coliemore Harbour

I've drunk from it and am still alive!

In Killiney, the fountain is outside the public toilets beside the underpass leading to the beach. In Seapoint there is a water tap at the showers beside the martello tower on the seafront.

Thanks for the replys. Went for a walk around Sandcove last night. Plan is to go out for an 8mile run this evening, having a bit of bad luck .... on my way home from work and car has just broken down, waiting for AA ... not a great start to my running around the sites of South Dublin😊

I live relatively close myself. Lots of quiet roads and some paths to run. I run home from work yesterday mostly along the seafront (see here or here). BTW it was the perfect evening with a fresh temperature and just a bit of drizzle/light rain. So much so that I stretched the run a few km because I didn't want it to end! :) BTW2 I am training by heart rate at the moment, trying to keep it at or below 140, so don't laught at the slow pace on the screen. :D

Just remembered there's a nice off road path called The Metals between People's Park and Dalkey Quarry. It's not flat but it's free of cars, except the few places where it crosses roads and streets.

    Where abouts is the tap?

Ran by there on Saturday but was looking for a water fountain near the benches / telescope.

Is the tap down at the little pier?

It's mounted on the low stone wall about 20 yards or so beyond the bench/telescope area you describe on the Dalkey side, just before the entrance into the boat slip area.

Had a very welcome ice cold drink from it this very morning on a tough 13 miler. Get some quick before its capped off when the water meters come in!!

Yup that's it - it's on the road side of the wall, from my memory it is just beside a telegraph pole.

A picture paints a thousand words: Picture. Link may not work, unless you're using the latest version of Google Maps.
Must start assembling a Google map outline of public taps and public toilets for runners. Here's a list of public toilets.

Thanks - looks like it could be easily missed as I ran right past it

I live in Dalkey and this is one of my favorite routes! It's got brilliant views, flat sections and tough climbs. Great for mountain running training. If you really want to test yourself, try do it in less that an hour, I've only managed it twice....

Just saw your route, pretty much the same one. Great views along it

Also, Killiney Hill is an excellent place to train. It has a great mix of trails, paths and steps. Good parking and a nice coffee shop too ;)
