Hey I picked up one of the original backward compatible ps3s on ebay for fairly cheap and after researching it seems that they pretty commonly get the YLOD. Anyone know any preventative measures to make sure it doesn't break on me?

Edit: Crap forgot to change forum before I posted. If someone could move it it'd be great thanks :)

The only thing that can really be said is keep it as cool as possible, don't have it stuck under a unit where its visable from the front only with no ventilation hemmed in on all sides try have it out in the open and elevated so the down facing vent ports have enough clearance to draw air in (sit it on a couple of CD cases or something).

The original fat ones have some pretty poor heat management that becomes all the more obvious if you ever have to take it apart and get at the guts of it, the disk drive is very big - gets warm, theres a whopper of an internal power supply-gets warm, the chips that do the processing and rendering-get warm, and even the spinning harddrive generates heat and you guessed it, gets warm!

All this kinda adds up and can lead to YLOD, regarding the design of it you cant really help that, Though don't take this as a huge downer cause even with all that, My original fat ps3 only gave up the ghost with YLOD this summer and i got a solid 6 years out of it. Which is great considering much of that lifetime was with it tucked in under a cabinet, :o

so overall just try and keep it away from other warm electronics in the open and elevated and you could be good for years of gaming :) on a more expensive note you could cut a bit of heat down by replacing the hdd with an ssd bit pricey but youll also get a bit of a speed bump with menu's loading and installs

hope some of this helps :D

    Hi.

I have repaired a load of these .

You need to open it up and remove the crap thermal paste on the Cpu and Gpu ,the manufacturer placed far too much onto the chips and it looks like a caked on clay at this stage. Replace the thermal paste with a decent type (MX2 etc (Arctic silver 5 is a bitch to work with)) ,blow out all the dust from the vents and clean the fan blades. After this you should be good to go .

There are many vids on Youtube on the stripdown process.

    Have fun.
