Boyfriend lying?

On Saturday night my boyfriend was out with some friends from his football team. At 2am I got a message to say that he was home. When either of us are out without the other we don’t usually text too much during the night but always make sure to text the other when home just to let the other know we’re home safe and say good night.

The problem I have is that he must have set the location option in Viber by mistake as he never has this on but the location in the message said that he was nowhere near where he lives. The place where his phone said he was is about 25-30 minute drive from where he lives. He has told me that he really was home and that although he wasn’t even anywhere near this place while out drinking he may have passed through in the taxi they were in while dropping people home.

I have no idea what to think. I have never had a reason to doubt him. I’m not a tech person and have no idea how accurate or not this location thing is or isn’t. I do not want to start a massive fight with no evidence other than the phone location in the message.

I was just hoping for some advice or maybe see if anyone has ever had an issue with Viber showing up an incorrect location of that kind of distance?

    Thanks for any advice given.

    It's pretty rubbish alright.

It uses the operators mast for location. It's not wholly accurate op.

I wouldn't worry about Viber's GPS. I have a weather app on my phone and sometimes it picks me up as being in random locations (places i haven't been in ages).

A friend's post on Facebook had a location of "near San Francisco" the other day... She was in the South East of Ireland! Technology is great... But flawed

It's telling that your first, and only reaction to this is that he is lying. Rather than the more likely reason of it being mistake. Has he given you reason to doubt him?

I've seen Killarney come up as the location on facebook for someone who was in Dublin at the time.

i txt my wife a while back, i was in the pub and it said i was at home, a good 8km apart, she wondered why i was gone home :pac:

I agree with Bag of chips, it's pretty weird that your first reaction is "OMG is he cheating?". I really don't think that's normal.

I was messaging a friend one day and in a five minute chat her location went from Dublin to Cork city to West Cork and back to Dublin again. GPS/Location settings aren't always correct.

Obviously there's a lack of trust op is there anything he did before that makes you suspicious? You'd probably want to work on the trust issue instead of worrying if the GPS on viber is accurate!

Hold on a minute. There were no "OMG' is he cheating" comments made by her. She is confused and doesn't understand that there are flaws in vibers gps, but wholly admits her boyfriend has never given her cause to not trust him in the past. It's a clear case of crossed wires as far as I'm concerned. She came on here looking for help to clarify what she was looking at, rather than flying off the handle and accusing him of cheating. Her confusion about his location does not immediately mean 'hes cheating'.

OP, as the others have said gps can be a bit off, so you've nothing to worry about.

She wasn't sure if her boyfriend was lying because the viber GPS was off. I don't think it's healthy for someones first reaction to wondering if he lying and then to go as far as to ask about it on a message board. I'd think the normal reaction would be to not even think about it much(if at all). Her confusion about his location might not mean "hes cheating" but it does immediately mean "is he lying".

Whether she was worried about him lying because he went off drinking more with his mates or she thought he might be cheating I think the general fact that she seems to not really trust him is a bit weird.

I think that those of us in the know about how unreliable gps is has an advantage over her. I'm just concerned you saw the word 'lying' in the post and are making a mountain out of it. Yes, I'm sure she does trust her boyfriend and she openly said she has never been given cause not to. A lot of people that aren't very techie might put a lot of faith in something like that and assume it to be accurate. All I'm saying is I can see why it confused her. She didn't go blowing a gasket on his doorstep, she asked here first.

I understand the point you're trying to make, but I don't think you can have a normal response to something you don't understand.

Why is it more likely that it was a mistake? The OP said she no knowledge of these things and like most people assumed it was accurate.

I wouldn't be hugely techy either, I'd personally have no idea how accurate viber/facebook location is etc but I do might my first response would be "The technology must be wrong" and I'd probably not think about it again. Maybe I'm just to trusting/naive though. :pac:

You're very fortunate Chucky ;) People react differently to these things, but I don't think a flash of confusion = op had an abnormal reaction. We'll agree to disagree on this one. I'm sure the op understands by now that you can't always believe what you see regarding technology, regardless of our takes on this :)

When I sometimes post things on Facebook (even on my laptop using WiFi!) the location pinned to it displays me as being at least 20-30 minutes away from where I actually am. Once or twice my IP thinks I'm in Austria! Depending on whether he's using 3G with GPS turned on then it can be around as bad.

About 2 years ago the old phone I had would say that I was in Ann Arbor, Michigan and show me exactly were on google maps while I would be in my parents basement outside of Monaghan town. I would go upstairs and it would say I was in Monaghan again (worse luck!)

My dad's tablet the other day said he was somewhere in the north of England when he was standing in the kitchen.

OP don't rely on gps, rely on your gut instinct.

Have to agree with most of the posters here, the GPS from viber is useless, maybe he really was at home!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 941 ✭✭✭Typer Monkey

I think the general consensus is that the GPS is wrong. I wonder if you both should drop the 'I'm home in bed' text altogether though. I mean, what really is the purpose of checking in at all hours of the morning? You won't see it until the next day anyway and at that stage you can text 'how was your night' etc.

I'd drive me mad if I was expected to text that I was home like I was checking in with a parent or something. And if you're doing it as reassurance that the other hasn't gone off with someone else, well it doesn't really serve that purpose as it crossed your mind that he sent the 'check in' text from somewhere else anyway.

Not entirely addressing your problem I know but just something that stood out to me.

I vibered my cousin the other day and set my location to Spain :) I wasn't in Spain :(

Viber reliably informed me before that a friend was texting me from the middle of the river Shannon. Their following messages saw them bouncing back and forth from bank to bank. Either they were having a really weird day (and neglecting to mention this in their messages) or else you have nothing to worry about. :)
