Race entry refund

Not sure if this is the right forum but need advice.

I have entered into a running race that unfortunately due to injury I will not be able to compete in. The entries for this race have now reached the maximum level and I rang the club to see if I could get a refund and maybe pass the entry on to someone who will use it. I got told that’s not how they operate and that it’s not that much money. After Christmas the 25E is basically my weekly food budget and I would really appreciate getting the money back.

Any advice on what I should do?

Most races would have a 'no refund' policy unfortunately. In your situation most runners would probably sell their entry to a friend even though they would have to run in your name. Not that I would recommend you doing that since it is against the forum policy ;)

I would presume that the no refund policy would have to be made clear at point of purchase,no?

Need to make myself some running friends:)

If they hold the race yearly they "might" defer the entry until next year, off hand I believe Connemara Marathon does this if you have a medical cert.

Outside of that you don't have any right to a refund,

IANAL but if the goods you bought (your race entry) were as advertised - the race is going ahead on the day and time specified, your entry is valid, etc etc - you don't have a right of refund.

Just had to google IANAL/I am not a lawyer- thanks for the link and that was what I feared.

I will ask about the differed entry, if they don't have it they should as its a great idea. This race takes in 50k on race entries which is some amount for a community based organisations but I feel that they have lost that community spirit and gone more corporate. Fingers crossed for deferred entry:)

I hope your not talking about the Dungarvan 10 because that is not a fair observation if you are.

Cold comfort for the OP I know but most road races experience 'no-shows' of 10% or more of the original entry. It would be a nightmare processing refunds or swaps for everyone, which is why there is usually a no-refund policy.

A lot of UK races seem to be able to manage that once its done a few weeks out from a race. Not sure it would be such a major issue . But that's for another thread.

That is interesting Morceli. I initially, by mistake, contacted the company who process the payment for the race and they didn't seem to have an issue with the refund but needed authorization from the event organiser. It may be a cost thing and I truly do value the work that people but into these events, but as races get more popular (and expensive) it would be good to see the bigger races offering a deferred entry or waiting list scheme.
