Looking for some guidance lads and ladies...

I'm organising our annual golf trip and looking at Headfort or Killarney as possible venues. We drive from Galway on a Friday, play golf, have dinner, pints etc. Up the next day for breakfast, golf, prize giving and drive home.

    Trip 1: Killarney
    Playing Mahonys point and killeen

    Or

    Trip 2: Kells
    Playing headfort old and new

Dilemma is accommodation and night life?

Never been to Kells, whats it like? and where is the best hotel to stay. Willing to travel 30 mins or so for somewhere to stay if its nice accommodation and has some decent pubs for a few pints

    Any advice welcomed,Cheers in advance

New Course in Headford is good, not sure what the night life is like. Not played Killarney. Not sure i would have picked either as a weekend away.
How about, Ballyliffin 2 good courses, Rossapenna 2 good courses or Portrush and Portstewart beside one another and night life ok in Portrush. Donegal and play Nairn & Portnoo would be another decent option.

Thanks Mike, there are a mixed abilities of golfers so that kinda put me off the ports and its a fair trek up to donegal for us. We have always tried to keep the travel to less than 2 hours or so if possible but this year its gonna have to be more. Criteria has been top 100 courses, last few years we have done, Rosses & Enniscrone, Tullamore & esker hills, shannon & doonbeg.
I'm kinda thinking Killarney myself but wanted to suss out what people thought about Headfort / kells from an entertainment perspective:)

Myself and 7 of my friends did Killarney in September 2012. The deal at the time was 3 courses(Mahonys Point, Killeen and Lackabane) for €150. AFAIK Lackabane is closed now as Leibherr bought the majority of the land on the course. Open to correction on that though. in fairness Lackabane was nothing special in comparison to Mahonys and Killeen.

6 of us travelled down from Dublin on the train and 2 lads drove with all the clubs. We stayed in The Plaza in the centre of the town close to various pubs and clubs etc. Courses are no longer than a 5 minute drive from The Plaza.

Would strongly suggest Killarney. The trip would be well worth it just to play Killeen itself. Let me know if you have any more questions I can help you with!

Im a member of killarney firstly.
Both courses were in superb condition from may onwards in 2013.
Special offer of 99 for 2 courses was avail all last yr.
that is good value for 2 very good courses.

town is mins walk away with loads of hotels/b&b very busy in summer season.
    hope this helps

Killarney is a great spot for a night out at the weekends. Not sure about mid-week. The Killeen course is one of my favourite parklands too, try to play it once a year at least. I'd go for Killarney over Headfort. Headfirst New course is a lovely track but I don't think it measures up to Killeen.

A society I'm involved in did a weekend in Killarney a few years ago. We went down Saturday morning. We played Mahony's Point that day, stayed in a hotel and went out to a few bars that night and played Killeen on the Sunday. It was a great weekend so I'd recommend Killarney.

I've played Headfort New a few times but never tried the Old Course. I stayed in Kells one night but Killarney would probably be a better option in my view as you'd have a bigger choice of accommodation and bars.

My club knightsbrook is 20 mins from kells and our course and Headford New would be considered top Championship courses in the area. I used to work in the Knightsbrook hotel so can assure you that your stay would be very enjoyable. There is lots of good places to eat / pubs in Trim. Marcie's is a must visit pub near the Hotel. If you would like to pm me i can give you contact details to get the best possible deal for a group.

Killarney is very good for a few nights away. There is plenty of competition between the hotels so some very good bargains to be had. Killarney had lots of pubs and even mid week would be busy enough. Both courses are worth playing and if the weather is nice Killarney is hard to beat

Hi shane thanks for the suggestion, before your post I had actually sent a mail to knightsbrook looking for a deal playing there and killeen castle, meal and accommodation as they had a similar offer last year. They offered a good deal but the consensus seems to be killarney is a great spot to head to so i think we'll head there.

Thanks to all for taking the time to respond. Much appreciated. Any other comments welcome including any pubs we should visit on our trip :)
