Whats the best unix os for a new user? It's an old acer zg5 netbook with a intel atom processor & 1 gb of ram. It's for my wife to use for really just web browsing such as facebook, Email & googling

Linux Mint XFCE should run very well, very intuitive and friendly for new user also.

    Mint 16

Manjaro Linux is another that would run well on your machine.

There are lots of options available. Two i've had personal experience of and could recommend either:

Mint - As per Stuxnet, I like Mint (installed it on a machine which used to run Vista like a dog) and it works fine. Not terribly fast but the target spec was low enough. Having said that, way faster than Vista ran on the same hardware. The target user was people of pension age, and they've used it fine ever since.

I also installed Peppermint OS (no particular relation to mint but a similar core - both built off debian) on a 5yr+ old netbook. It takes a minimalist approach, and the user has had no problems since. They previously had a thing called Linpus which was no longer providing updates and even getting an updated browser onto it caused problems. But since Peppermint has gone on, it has been fine.

@200motels..are you on manjaro? I was looking at the KDE version...1.8gig for the iso. What's on it? Is it packed full of programs?

Lubuntu is my current favourite. Ubuntu with the LXDE desktop environment. Its lean, mean and doesnt come pre-packaged with the extras that Ubuntu has these days. Perfect for anyone used to using Windows XP.
