Eircom or Sky?

Alright lads. Been getting dire "peak time" speeds with Vodafone for weeks and am getting no response from them so a move will probably be in order. I'm in North Tipp so no fibre yet. Who has a more consistent/reliable service in the speeds department...Sky or Eircom?

I'd stay away from Eircom. You will probably fare out better with Sky, but remember, there will be no change to your line. You'll get a lovely new state of the art modem from Sky that you can leave on all the time without it heating up. Sky also allow unlimited downloads.Make sure you ask Sky to test the line. In fairness to them they will allow near the max a line can accomadate.Sky's CS is also way ahead of the other providers IMO.

My experience with sky was terrible. I'm with eircom efibre now and it's brilliant.

I have dealt with Sky's customer service in relation to TV, and I was well impressed. Managed to get bill cut down for my parents too.

In relation to broadband, you could try UTV (who are a relatively small company so customer service would be better), Imagine, as well as Eircom and Sky.

I personally would not recommend Eircom. Others have found then brilliant, but I find their billing systems to be sneaky (E.g. Billing ex-Vat, excessive call charges internationally, 10 cent set up charges, not including 076 in call plans etc.). Again, you will find people who will praise Eircom to the cows come home, but I cant stand them.

Regardless of who you go with, make sure you get all the details, names of people you were speaking to and read through the terms and conditions to avoid any problems.

I rarely use the Landline for phone calls but I find Eircom's bb service to be flawless. Sky's tv service is second to none but their bb was awful.

Sky broadband speed is very poor in general but especially at peak times.

Thanks lads. Kind of a pro/against for both then. I was with UTV prior to Vodafone and they were worse if that's possible.

Sky's bb speed I have found is the most consistent especially at peak times

Looks like it's boiling down to an eircom/sky decision at this stage. Do any neighbours have sky? Maybe you could ask them. Before you get sky you need to find out how it will cost as there are two different charges. It depends on whether your exchange is unbundled or not.

A guy down the street has Sky who was previously with Vodafone. He had the same issues as me. He says they're good but he's not the sharpest tool in the box.

I have been a happy Sky BB customer for the last year. I was with Eircom for a few years before changing to sky. My line (old copper) speed test is about 10Meg. Both speed tests on Eircom and Sky gave the same speeds (as it is the same hardware used) HOWEVER....... Sky are not throttling \ restricting download speeds. With Eircom, best I would get is 512 kilobytes speeds, with Sky I am getting a constant 1.3Meg, so happy as can be on a copper line.

Have been with Sky for over a year now and I regretted it even though I didn't have to pay line rental but they seem to have ironed out the problems with me anyway. The modem I think is terrible as in range, the poorest I have had .Got a call from vodafone with an offer €39 and all though nearly €10 cheaper a month than sky I am very slow to move .Rang Sky and best they could do was €42.50.Asked him to match the €39 but he wouldn't so I told him I would have to switch.Thats fine he said. But don't think I will,I'll try again next week.

Sky in the beginning of the 2013 wasn't the best but it has improved greatly and now i have the most consistent bb in the country (excluding fibre areas)

My experience was the exact opposite. It started off brilliantly but got progressively worse and worse as time passed.

Take it with a pinch of salt Johnny O P, joking. Sky seems the finest for us. Sometimes it can get slow but not too bad. There's a months trial on it anyway of ya try it out and aren't happy with them...

Hahahaha and I thought he was the local neighbourhood watch!! I went with Sky and have been getting the same poor speeds as with Vodafone but I'm hoping this will be resolved when Eircom sort out this cable breakage thing under the Irish sea.

The name cameraman is there for a reason. Did you find Vodafones speeds slow for months or just around Christmas just outta curiosity? We had it 3 years ago and it was slower than eircom but a lot have said Vodafone have improved since (well up until Christmas anyway )

I went down to his fortress and checked his speeds...same as mine. Yeah Vodafone was rock solid in the performance department up until late November/December though it was really December when I took any notice. They ignored any contact I made with them and that's why I changed to Sky and it was afterwards that the Eircom fault came to light. I'd be happy enough to stay with Sky if the speeds return to normal soon but if not I'll be off to Eircom before the 30 day trial is up. Hold me?

Fortress you're a header. I find Sky the solid finest but that said I want fibre broadband and Sky can't give an answer on when they'll roll it out. We are out of contract with them tomorrow anyway. If you decide to switch yo eircom gimme a shout, help out the local businesses n all that ;)

"Rumoured" to be April for Sky fibre but I wouldn't hold me breath. I rang Eircom last week about fibre in town and their April launch and the response I got from the rep was "well if that's what it says on the map"....and that was it! Helpful or what?

Never mind the map. I have no trust in it. It was November , then pushed back to Feb and now it's April. I wouldn't be surprised if it was pushed back yet again at this rate

They need to sort out this breakage first. I remember reading not so long ago that 2016 was the roll-out date. Where I can't remember but I definitely read it.

I wouldn't recommend sky, I was with Eircom until Nov 13 and never had an issue for 3 years.I change to Sky as their package was very appealing. The Sky broadband was ok for a month and a half then went to bits.
I'm currently getting downloads of 0.09mbs and ping of 2400,I raised a call with customer service. They sent out new router and still no improvement.
Got a call today to say I'm suffering with line congestion and nothing Sky could do, I'd probably have the same issue regardless of provider. I told them that I never had this issue with eircom.I was giving an apology and offered options of staying, cancellation and change over. Have already been on to Eircom so will be going back on this month.
