    Hi guys
Looking for recommendations on courses for a golfing trip this spring/summer in Scotland. We are thinking about the Scottish highlands/East region. Any previous experiences or recommendations appreciated and thanks in advance.

Ive never been over on a golfing holiday so cant offer any advice but Im well jealous, this year will be a great year in Scotland, I wonder will the hotels charge through the nose because of the ryder cup?

For a concentration of great courses, the two best locations are either St Andrews or North Berwick. Great towns as well.

Alternatively fly to Inverness and stay in Dornoch which is another great town with excellent golf nearby (Dornoch, Brora, Golspie, Tain, Castle Stuart, Nairn)

Would highly recommend the Dundee/Angus area -Carnoustie is a great base and you can get good deals on the hotel.
The Championship course is fantastic but expensive but the Burnside and Buddon courses are well worth a go.
From Carnoustie you have loads of options around the Dundee area -personally would recommend Panmure,Letham Grange(both courses),Downfield,King James III,Murrayshall, Edzell, and Monifeith to name but a few.
Also you have the option of going over the Bridge into Fife (St Andrews,Kingsbarns, country).

Avud this is such a great trip.We did this trip twice based at the hotel in Carnoustie.
We got really cheap deals for the hotel on booking.com and used it as a base to travel to St.Andrews.
Carnoustie itself expensive but o so worth it!one of the great days.
Burnside beside it excellent and we played Monifieth on the way into Dundee.
You need to cross the Tay bridge and head to St Andrews even if just for a walkabout wonderful to be there.
The Old Course is also very expensive but the Eden course which runs beside it is not.You get the chance to play on the same turf for a fraction of the price.
If you are a golfer this is the trip!

Thanks for all the replies guys. We've decided to base ourselves in Aviemore in the Scottish highlands. So any recommendations on courses/stay and play in that region are welcomed.

Am off to Scotland for a golf trip the Masters week. Hopefully playing the Old Course on either Thursday or Saturday (fingers crossed for the ballet!) booked into Carnoustie for the Friday. House booked in St. Andrews. Ferry over Wednesday afternoon and back Saturday evening.

Didn't do the organsing however can get the details if you would like.

Sorry for delay in getting back to you on this.

We ended up with the dreaded 9 so had pushed costs up a bit.

Getting Ferry from Larne on Wednesday afternoon and back Saturday evening.

About €110/120 per person- one of the group has some contacts in that area so might get a small discount.

House in middle of St. Andrews booked on holidaylettings.co.uk and is working out about €100 per person for the three nights.

    Golf is;

Thurs- Old Course/ alternative so either €120 or say €70 depending on the other St. Andrews course we play.

Fri- Carnoustie on the Fri and is €145.

Sat- Old Course/ alternative so either €120 or say €70 depending on the other St. Andrews course we play.

Finally decided on Dornoch as a base for out trip. Thinking of playing Tain, Golspie and boat of Garten near Aviemore. Have you played any of these Architect ?
We don't want to difficult of courses as there are some high handicap guys with us.

Cheers for that Oilbeefhooked, brother recommend Boat of Garten heard its nice and green fees very reasonable. Would like to play Royal Dornoch however the higher handicap guys in our party may not enjoy it if it's too tough, and it's quiet expensive not to have a good days golfing.
Has anyone on boards played Royal Dornoch ? Would be interested in their thoughts on this.

Royal Dornoch is spectacular. Was there in August 2012 and am dying to return for a visit. The course itself I thought was forgiving enough. The rough is sparse enough and the fairways are fairly wide.

The carrys arent' excessive to be honest and there are some superb 2nd shots into greens. Give them a buzz and discuss a price discount for a group of ye. I found them to be so friendly up there. The town is very small but there's a couple of nice pubs and a superb cafe and ice cream parlour there too.

If your a fan of history and links golf, put it on your bucket list!

Played at all 3 of your courses a few year back. Boat of Garten was a nice course. We were teeing off and could hear a bagpipe drifting in and out. it sounded like the the army was coming over the hills to rescue us. I wasnt a big fan of Tain. One hole in particular was a little quirky. I think it's called the Alps. Two large mounds to hit between Looked like a woman's size D breasts. Didnt carry it---ah the shame--and the ball rolled back in to a sand trap right at the base. GRRR. Dornoch was spectacular. When I go back I will play it twice. there is also an easier course at Dornoch called the Struie. Your high handicappers would enjoy it. I would also recommend a course up there called Brora. Fun course. Greens were surrounded by electric wire since there was cattle on some of the fairways. enjoy the trip. There's also a distillery in Inverness along the way.

+1 for Dornoch - fantastic links. Random fact it is also Tom Watson's favourite links

Change of plan on highlands area. For definite it St. Andrews going for the 3 day ticket on June bank holiday. Looking into the new, castle and jubilee courses. Anyone played these or have any recommendation's ?

Played both the new and jubilee courses before - both quality layouts and pretty tough, particularly off the tee as there isn't much room for error - esp. on the Jubilee. Heard great things about castle but never played it. If you are looking at other courses in the area elie (30 mins away) is worth a go (quirky kind of track - plenty of short par 4s but still very enjoyable) and both courses in crail (20 mins from st andrews) are decent too
