Coincidentally I'm just after being involved with a similar problem that a farmer had, seems the councils are going to re-establish all right of ways in the country and map them...just a little present the Green Party left behind

Dont know if its available online but the gist of it is that there is nothing worse than people putting up signs saying "private property-keep out" etc and arent some UK farmers very mean when they dont cut the brambles and nettles etc on the sides of the public walkways that traverse their land.

Dont ya know that the hard working taxpayers of Europe are paying those layabout farmers and general country types to do nothing and its our right to walk jolly well anywhere we like.

Its more the attitude and general tone that pi**ed me off to be honest.
Well worth a read if you can find it.

    Lots of bits like;

"Private; No Public Access has to be one of the most dispiriting signs in English language "

"In the Cotswolds, where I spend some of my time,I am enraged by farmers who let nettles and brambles sprout on ancient walkways-a sure way to put walkers off. They need to be reported"

"Why should those lucky enough to own large tracts of the nation not let the rest of us ramble over it if we abide by the rules?"

Thought there was a time limit to put in a proposal for a right of way?
Sure I saw something that all had to be notified to local councils by a certain date this year.

At least the recent case in Sligo might soften the cough of a few councils.Maybe time to hold the elected and esp. the non elected members of councils personally liable for some of their hare brained schemes and ideas.

    We already do.

    Think its a cultural thing.

In the UK farmer/landowner is usually associated with the image of the squire in his manor putting down the plebs, not the commercial farmer.

In Ireland due to Land League etc etc ,private property is seen as a very important right.

The days of "An Englishmans home is his castle" seem to be long gone.

Are those the ones already marked on maps ie those you can see on PRAI, or new unmarked ones?

In Connemara we have Keep Ireland Open haunting people. I believe Ruairi Quinn is also involved in promoting access. Local farmers here often have all comers traipsing where ever they feel like. Often they will actively ignore the farmer and pretend he's not there. Just yesterday I was sitting in a mans kitchen and he was telling me of a large group of walkers coming down off one of the mountains. He had recently erected a sheep net fence on a stone wall, the group did significant damage as they each picked different points to cross and knocked a lot of the wall. That is a boundary between his fenced land and thousands of hectares of commonage.

The UK situation is different I'd absolute hate to have footpaths, bridleways etc crossing farms here. One only has to spend some time on UK forums to see the issues they present to farmers. Yes, we do have it somewhat better here but there are a lot of active people promoting access to farmland for recreational purposes. I don't mean to be blunt but it's not something farmers should think isn't happening here. We are portrayed by some of these people as the EU yokels for not being modern enough in our thinking re access.

Just been involved with one farmer but the council told me about the rest, won't say any more here, just that I think its going to be a problem.
