    Quick question.

What is the handiest and cheapest way to get to Dijon preferably or Lyon in France from either Shannon or Dublin airport? Planning to go for a weekend to visit a friend in May.

    Thanks a lot in advance.

Would Basel be too far from where you want to be?

I think it's more than a 2 hour drive. I can't seem to find anything closer from Dublin, unless you want to look at connecting Ryanair flights.

Its my first time travelling to France so not too sure where that airport is :P

Dijon is my destination anyway and just looking for the cheapest way to get there without a huge amount of hassle :)

Your best bet would be to fly into Lyon with Aer Lingus and take the train which is around 30 e each way. (booked in advance)

I'm sure you could probably get a bus service either or it could be better flying into Paris and taking train down.

Not overly cheap but you could do Lyon and train all for 215 approx. booking soon enough once you would be fine with hand luggage only. 155 average flights and 60 train.

If you have time, fly to beauvais and bus/train to Dijon, did it before and it was very cheap when booked well in advance, esp. compared to flying to Lyon.

Any particular reason it has to be Ryanair? Aer Lingus fly to both Lyon and Geneva on the cheap.

If you're only looking at Ryanair, you're really limiting yourself imo. Ryanair doesn't fly into many airports there and they ones they do, there are no flights from Ireland.

And some of the French ones they do fly to have very poor public transport so it pays to fly to more central airports at times.

    Grenoble.

Ryanair to Bordeaux, then Eastern to Dijon! :-)

Alternatively RA to Stansted then STN to Dole which is not too far from Dijon ... but you might have to walk.
Or EI/AF to Charles de Gaulle and TGV to Dijon - probably the simplest and greatest choice of times.

Used to do this a fair bit. Got Ryanair to Grenoble. There was a private coach for about €20 that went straight to Lyon city centre...

Although, sometimes if Aer Lingus to Saint-expury were competitive I would just go with them for handiness.

Very bad assumption - Ryanair are not always cheaper even on direct comparisons (same airport).

When are you planning on going? You can get direct flights to Lyon from Dublin return for €110 with Aer Lingus

Lads, lads, lads, read Brembo's second message: he's not going to Lyon, he's going to Dijon. By public transport, Dijon is as close or closer to Paris than Lyon (typical train times Paris-Dijon 1h30ish; Lyon-Paris 2h00ish unless you wait half the day for the next TGV) For completeness, it's closest of all to Dole (0h30 by train, but you have to get to the station first - always the hardest part with French regional airports ... and STN-Dole isn't confirmed yet)

Aer Lingus' schedule to/from Lyon isn't great and not very competitive. About six months ago, I had a meeting right on the edge of the Lyon Airport site, but it was still cheaper for me to drive 400km to Rodez and get a Ryanair flight to Dublin, and at a more convenient time. I'd say stick with Paris (CdG, not Beauvais) and keep an eye on both Aer Lingus and Air France's prices.
