pulled by a 2.2ltr jeep, tow capacity 2000kgs

to pull about 2 400kg bullocks

    must be a twin axel,

I think 800kg weight is enough to pull with the weight of the trailer on top of that.

but what size should i be looking for.

An 8x5 would do it but is of limited use. A 10x5'10 would be round 850-900kg and would allow you room for up to four stores for tractor use also.

    8*5 fit two comfortably?

maybe i should be going 10x5 if i ever had say 3x300kgs, . the jeep would tow that surely.

id go that route as its nice to have that little extra room plus nothing worse than trying to jam animals into a trailer

If a 10x5'10 is 850-900kg, what weight would a 12x5'10 double axel be, or even the tri-axel 14x5'10, this takes allot into consideration when using jeeps

any tips on looking at trailers,

how does one check the breaks

is it the norm to take the trailer for a spin?. . . like bring it for a tow

Well done my man you must have great cattle. I sometimes struggle to put 5-6 into a 12 x6 but 2 into 11x6 what's your secret.

    lol :D

    if only. .

some times i find that a big clean trailer is just as bad as a small one.

in the mart i do be thinking, if i covered it in sh1t and old silage would they just walk in. . lol

I know all about it. There's always 1 that just won't go up even if there's room for 10.

You will fit 4 300kg weanlings comfortably in an 8x5. And a lovely size trailer tucked in behind you

Buy new and mind it. Only buying dirt and trouble.

    you serious?

ill have to take a look at it, .

    pricey enough 10x5s

8x5 would be a easier and got cheaper. .

some times i wonder about those older trailers on done deal, the 8x5 or even the 10x5, u can never be too sure about weight of them or the condition of the brakes

Deadly. Have one myself. Now I'm talking 8X5. Some lads advertise as being 5' but they're only 4'7".

Paid €3300 all in for aerlite 8x5. Lovely trailer. 13" rims leaves trailer nearer the ground (easier load) than a 10' and less expense when comes to changing tyres.

We pull with a 2.5 pajero and you'd know all about when you've two good cows in it!

With enforcement of weight down the road a towing capacity of 2K is suitable for a 8X5 box only. You will squeeze 3X400kg animals into it or 5 300kg animals. A lot depends on how far you are traveling. I imagine that an8X5 box is around 500kgs but not sure.

The days are limited when you will be able to pul a 14X6 box with 6 heavy bullocks/cows with a land cruiser. Buy new or one that is in VGC however few 8X5 boxes come up SH. A new one will cost 3.5-4K. Price also in NI as for a spin up and down you may save 500 euro.

    Any recomendations on manufacturer. .

I hear a good bit on here about hudsen and ifw.

Are these not top labels in the brown Thomas shop window?

I'd be looking for value for money.

8x5 is what I'm looking for,

Max towing distance is only 15kms

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 828 ✭✭✭TUBBY

Hard beat aerlite for a well made trailer. He based in tuam. Also Murphy trailers in Kerry are decent. Both a bit cheaper than a Hudson and wud me my choice. Nugent very good too but tad heavier than others. Personally find iw not that great for the big name they have but each to their own.

Also wondered, do I go ramp or swing door,

Course ramp is better for cattle, , , but is that what I should be going for,

Bit of hassle loading stuff in the coop no?

Any 8X5 new will cost 3K+ I think a good S/H will cost nearly that as well. 8X5 are very hard to source S/H as few people sell same. Just had a scan through DD saw this
    http://www.donedeal.ie/trailers-for-sale/rice-cattle-box/6096349

Not sure but looks in good nick may not have been used for farming

Nugent, Murphy, Aerlite, are all trailer makers. It is a matter of looking around.

A ramp is your only job really. Don't know can you even get swing door any more off mainstream manufacturers.

Get spare wheel too and back gate when you are at it.

Also, worth looking out for lights and brakes are compliant with regs ( all wheels braking)

    Thanks Pudsey,
I agree little sh ones out there,

And one would want to save 30\40% on buying one.

Looking at them aerlite on the web, might call up to him

Did ya look at the TuffMac trailers at all? We went from an IW to a TuffMac and are very happy with the trailer.

The advantages of buying new is brakes, lights should all be perfect. You also should have 5-6 years before you have to do anything with the box as long as you grease it. A good few sell 8X4'6'' trailers nothing wrong but they are that little smaller and you may struggle to get two bigger cattle in. However they tend to be a bit cheaper. However make sure to price NI I know it a full day to collect but it could save you a nice bit. Back in 2008 I saved I think about 600 on a 8X5 IW box.

If you buy when parking do not leave handbrake on or jockey wheel engaged. Also give box a small pull forward if you reverse or push back into parking spot. I do not know why but was told it after I bought mine I think it prevents brakes locking.

Porter up in Derry make good stuff. Don't know if Hamilton are still in production, but they were a seriously good trailer. You could try calling Thomas Cassiday up in Ballyconnell as if can have nice second hand stuff.

What is the story with home made trailers? hopefully no signs of legislation against then?

The tuffmac 8x5 only had single axle braking when l was looking at them, perhaps they have upped the spec since.

Days of homemade trailers are numbered, has been this way on continent for years. All trailers (tractor and jeep) will have to have a manufacturers plate in the not too distant future.

    Hi
Aerlite one on the Done Deal (Regans in Frenchpark).
    http://www.donedeal.ie/cattletrailers-for-sale/aerlite-cattle-trailer-8x5-2-years-old/5958976

Also, a nice one new on the DD but make not mentioned. It 2800 which is keenly priced.

Might be worth a call for either.
