    To complement the Dublin Airport Live ATC feed and Flightradar24 Thread which
    frequently refer to inbound aircraft routing to the Dublin holds depending on what Runway is in use at EIDW, the following is a high level overview of the Instrument (IFR) holds and approaches for Commercial aircraft using Runways 28, 10, 16 or 34 which you may hear from Air Traffic. Approaches can be localiser only, full ILS, VOR, NDB etc.

    Nice work.

    First post, delete any of the mentions of 1X STARs as these will not be issued EVER by ATC and are for fuel planning only.

    Some info on Dublin's Approaches from Boards member Urajoke:

    SID - Standard Instrument Departures
    STAR - Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (covered here)

    With regards to the approaches:

    eg LIPGO 1L (Lipgo One Lima) for RWY28 -or- BOYNE 4U (Boyne Four Uniform) for Rwy10

    Uniform=ULTAG Hold
    November=NASRI Hold
    Kilo=KERAV Hold
    Sierra=SORIN Hold
    Lima=Lapmo Hold

    "BOYNE 4U" is the STAR that starts at IFR waypoint "BOYNE" (North East) and goes to ULTAG (North West) hold for Rwy10. it's not a new Approach but it's one that has been modified or updated 3 times since introduction.

    BOYNE 1X RWY28 STAR (North East)
    NIMAT 1X RWY28 STAR (North East)

    OLAPO 1X RWY28 STAR (North West)
    VATRY 1X RWY28 STAR (South East)

    LIPGO 1X RWY28 STAR (South East)
    OSGAR 1X RWY28 STAR (South West)

    SUTEX 1X RWY28 STAR (South West)
    BUNED 1X RWY28 STAR (South West)

    Is there a similar hold and approach map like this around anywhere for Shannon?

    I can put one together and post it up if you want for SNN Approaches.
    If there is any interest I might put a Dublin Departures routing charts.

    The charts for most airports are available here (https://charts.aero/airport/EINN) to download. I got seriously addicted over Christmas with the bad weather and had to go search for them so as to build the full picture.

    You can also get the charts for the aerodrome and parking positions allowing you to follow the instructions from the ground controller to taxiing aircraft. It got quite interesting on St Stephan's day when planes couldn't depart and stands weren't available. Some were allowed to taxi around others to skip ahead and you could clearly see the route there were being given.

    Last year I once was given a BAMLI 1X arrival into Dublin so I can't say that ATC don't use the "X" arrivals. Its just a shortened version of the BAMLI 1L.

    We DO NOT use them, if you were given one it was in error and should NOT have been issued.

    Fair enough. We were quite happy to take it as it was shorter! Seems crazy they go to the trouble of issuing a plate that is not to be used!

    The airlines requested a shorter star than the Lima so they could carry less fuel when it's quiet (note still enough legally required for the flight before anyone asks) as they won't fly the full star when it's quiet and barely get to KERAV and SORIN before a direct LAPMO is issued.

    The 1X is the compromise, it's ONLY there for fuel planning by airline OPS. It will be in the flight plan but Dublin ATC on first contact will issue a 1L arrival on first contact. This allows us the extra portions of the star IF required.

    It was hard for both ATCO and pilot to understand when it was brought it but thankfully now it's in 14-15 months we have both got used to it and understand the reasons.
