Buying my first car this year and I have a 2 year old so it can't be too much of a banger. Fair bit of room in it and ideas of the safest small and cheap car you can buy? Need it to be fairly cheap on Tax/Insurance, I have about €1500 to spend on the car itself.

Ideas so far (pretty typical first cars):

    VW Polo
Toyota Yaris (Himself hates them and said he would refuse me park it in the drive )
    Opel Corsa
    Ford Fieta
Ford Focus (Too big/Expensive?? -I really like them)

    Hate Micras

The Yaris would be the best bet there. A tidy, well treated one will serve you well.
