I have a free travel pass and yesterday went to get a DART from Sydney parade yesterday. When I went to the station, the desk was unstaffed so I was unable to get a ticket.
Is that all you can do in the situation. Don't use it very often so it never happened before.

Don't you need one to get through the barriers?

You can get one at stations if manned but if they aren't you can just show the pass at your destination to a staff member at the automated barriers.

If your destination isn't manned then the exits won't require a ticket to exit that I've seen.
