Laptop Charger Fire :O

    Hey,

Got a charger for my 5 yr old acer aspire 5735 laptop about 5 weeks ago. The one before that made a weird crackling sound before giving up. That particular charger was itself a replacement charger as the original charger I got with the laptop also went on fire about 2.5 years ago.

Anyway, this charger I bought 5wks ago went on fire on the connection where the lead meets the block. I quickly turned off the socket switch and when everything cooled down pulled out the lead from the block. The end of the lead was totally fried but the block seemed unharmed. When I took apart the plug, there was a 13A fuse in it - which I think is wayyy too high for a laptop charger.

Long story short, I put an old deal lead (with 5A fuse) into the charger and all's working perfectly again.

Do you guys think that the fact a 13A fuse was in the plug could have been the cause of the fire or could it be the fact that the offending charger is probably a cheap knock-off as it was purchased at a certain oriental electronics store in town!

I was lucky I was in the room or the result could have been a lot worse.

Any advice would be much appreciated + anybody experience this before?

    Thanks!

    Mike
