Fifa 14 on PS3 playing passing without pressing buttons

As it says on the tin. Very frustrating. Usually when moving fast on attack. Instead of a player turning and bombing down the line a pass or some sort happens without me pressing a button That's one example it happens in different scenarios too. Not too often but often enough to frustrate. Anyone experienced this?

when trying the dribbling training exercise I noticed as I try to slalom in between the poles the players just kicks the ball at the second poll.

could it be my left stick?
