How To Use Pedals Properly

Aside from the obvious functions of a foot switch or pedal that is.

I received a few pedals from a relative who was clearing out his collection (baby on the way!) but to be honest, I think I'm a little out of my depth using them.

Firstly, he's light years ahead of me in terms of ability and skill.
Secondly, when I use them, well....they don't sound great.

Maybe I have the settings aresways but I tried a fiddling with the knobs but the difference seems minimal. Maybe I don't have the ear to notice?
The distortion pedals for example, they just sound muddy to my ear, whereas the amp distortion that I've been using until now, gives a clear crisp distortion sound.

Does anyone know if there are classes available, or tutorial websites around that can teach someone how to get the most out of their equipment?
I've always been a plug and play kinda person but having come into this kit, I would actually like to maybe move up the learning curve abit.

    Any help/advice is welcome.
    Thanks.

The pedal are all Marshall, Guv'nor, Jackhammer, Bluesbreaker and Compressor.
I'm using an LTD H-51 with a Marshall G30R CD amp.
I use them in the house but we have neighbours so I only ever play with headphones on. Could this be limiting the scope of the amps output and sound quality?

O hang on until I do a search through YouTube and bring you all the vids I think might help.

The reason I asked was if you were local I or someone local might of had a look to see if they could help.

    But yea. Help yourself.

Well a quick google search leads to the marhsall website where they have a section giving lists of settings for each of the above pedals, complete with audio clips of how they sound.

Just mess about with them, try them one at a time on a clean channel to see the effect they actually make on the sound and then mess about with settings. It might sound crap for a while, but you'll eventually dial in a tone or sound you'll love!
