    Hurray!

TAYTO Park is planning to install what will be the second biggest roller coaster in Europe.
The amusement park is aiming to set up the 8.5m attraction in 2015 as a part of a programme including new rides, a new entrance and additional parking and facilities.
Owner Ray Coyle told the Herald that the proposal for the extension would soon be submitted to the relevant planning authorities.
"A planning application is ready for lodgement at the end of the month with Meath County Council," he added.
The roller coaster will be the second biggest in Europe in terms of speed and length.
"It will be 1.4kms long, and 32 metres at its highest point," said Mr Coyle, "and it will be able to take 700 people an hour."
There are two trains on the attraction and each of them has 12 seats. It also has a top speed of 105km an hour.
The wooden ride, which will take up about 2.8 acres, has to be built specially in America to suit the site, Mr Coyle revealed.
The only roller coaster that is bigger in dimensions is in Europa Park in Germany.
The owner hopes the attraction -- and the other works -- will be big draw for potential visitors. A total of ¿25m is set to be invested over the next year-and-a half, with the new developments scheduled to be completed by April 2015.

    Woop Woop.

    Recession has ended .....

We're building a roller coaster with its ups and downs.

I'm not sure it is good news. Rollercoasters (and amusement parks) age pretty quickly and end up looking dated after a few years.

Also, what's with it being made of wood? Aren't they normally made out of stronger materials that don't rot or warp these days?

Just so long as they don't get Ronan Keating to sing it's theme song it'll all be grand.

Hopefully this doesn't get nuked by NIMBYism or the land isn't already earmarked for a landfill or prison, we could have had a massive theme park built in Lusk by now if it weren't for that.

Last time I went on a wooden roller coaster, I couldn't feel my cheeks for an hour. Wooden roller coasters vibrate too much!

a large scale tourist attraction like this should be built in dublin, not in Meath.

apart from the odd overpriced sports/mnusic events and boring tours, there is f*ck all to do in Dublin and something like this would help to change this.

I fecking love rollercoasters. This is great news. I'll be shoving children out of the way to get the front seat on the thing.

    I think it's great news.
It's a shame Ireland doesn't have a theme park, let alone no rollercoasters, so I can see this being a real coup for tourists and of course our own families looking for a day out.
    I think it's a great idea.

If there's "nothing" to do in Dublin, there's an absolutely tiny fraction of nothing to do in Meath. We deserve the rollercoaster more.

I love Tayto Park, the animals are brilliant. The hurdy gurdy side of it has no interest for me however, and all the rides are on top of the entrance fee (which isn't terribly cheap as it stands, but is still good value). But if a rollercoaster means more meerkats, then I'm all for it.

I have always found them to be well kept and happy looking. The enclosures are not small, not when you consider what we all thought was acceptable in the zoo for years.

It's only outside of Dublin, and the fact it's not in the city means it's more accessible to everyone else in the country. If they didn't have it in Meath they wouldn't have been able to afford the land that means they can keep expanding it.

Also, it's for kids, not bored teenagers/tourists.

Ray. People will come, Ray. They'll come to Meath for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it.

Ah, bet it'll be kids-themed, though. Not for adults.

Didn't tramore have a rollercoaster before (is it still there?).

I recall hearing years ago that there was supposed to be a theme park being built in Louth before (somewhere around Drogheda, but I could be wrong). Always thought that if it was done right, and it had a roof, it could be a genius idea. Look at the amount of people that visit places like Port Aventura every year.

Now of course, We'd never have anything like that over here (we'd aim for it, but our Irishness would kick in along the way and we'd ruin it somehow) but I'd say a rollercoaster would be a great idea. Much like I thought that that outdoor ski ramp in Dundalk was also a good idea (though admittedly, indoors would be better).

I wish Mr. Tayto well in his roller coaster endeavors.

Are you for real? First of all, there's 3 times more people OUTSIDE of Dublin than in it, secondly Ashbourne is about 15 mins from the airport, it would be quicker to get from O'Connell St. to Tayto Park than from O'Connell St to Dundrum.

The world doesn't revolve around jewbalee-in (Dublin)

Length of rollercoaster is not the most important measure. Speed, g-force, upside-downness and all that muck be where it's at.

Probably a reason why it's coming to Ireland. Because it will be less fun than Alton Towers.

I'm really happy for this. I normally travel thousands of miles to queue up for a rollercoaster that I chicken out of at the last minute. Now I can do it whilst eating crisps. Can't wait!

Could be a great attraction, and presumably if they're building a big rollercoaster they'll also have other ancillary rides.

Hopefully its a real idea with real financing in place and not just some speculative marketing.

Disappointed that its going to be made of wood, they can be incredibly jerky and uncomfortable. But any rollercoaster is better than no rollercoaster, as the wise old saying goes.

Firstly I am an ill-informed pessimistic cretin.

Secondly, everyone else is using steel piping, electromagnetic propulsion and braking, spending twice as much for half the length of coaster.

I've no doubt it will be good fun to go on but don't expect the Six Flags Batman experience, in spite of it being brand new and very long.
