Help with PayPal as an seller?

    Hello,

I'm planning on selling my phone ( iPhone 5 ) to another person in Ireland and the buyer wants to pay by PayPal.

I have never really used PayPal before, only a bit of shopping on eBay for cheap stuff no more than a few euros but I have never used PayPal as a option of receiving money.

Is there any questions I'll have to ask the buyer first, what cautions and risks I will have to take and will the buyer be able to scam me like taking back the money when I have shipped it?

    Thanks.

You'll need their email address to send an invoice. You can put a description in the invoice, so it's clear what's being sold. Make sure you send by a tracked method such as registered post. If they open a paypal dispute, then once you've entered tracking information, paypal should side with you.
Also, paypal will only protect you if you send to the address the buyer enters when they are paying.

Alright. I want the buyer to send the money to me first before I ship, when I have received the money; is the buyer able to take back the money?

You do realise that Paypal will take a whack of your cash as well?

Yeah but I heard sending it as an gift will avoid the fee? Which method should I use, the one that gives PayPal a sum of cash or the gift method to avoid the fee? Also, around how much would PayPal take? Sorry for all these questions, better to be safe than sorry, haha.

How much are you selling your phone for?

Paypal gift will not be treated as a trade therefore the buyer will not have any comeback and it does avoid the fee

    350 euros.

So, it is best for me to tell the buyer to send the payment as a gift instead?

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it. :)

Gift is better for you, not so for the buyer as they are left unprotected. I think it will be about €12 in fees on €350 if it is done as a credit card funded payment from your buyer. I think gift payments need to come from balance or lodged from a bank account first therefore your buyer may not be in a position to pay the Gift option

Ah. I have two different accounts, one that is unverified and another that is verified. Which account should I use? I would like to withdraw the 350 in my PayPal once I have received the payment from a bank, is that possible?

To be honest you should of read into it before you sold on ebay.

Ebay requires you to accept paypal payments and to be paid through ebay themselves.

Paying outside of ebay is against their rules and if I were the buy I would be taking back my offer and leaving bad feedback if I came across someone looking to be paid via gift and outside ebay as I would be without protection.

If you are that afraid then sell locally using adverts.

The buyer is from Adverts and wanted to pay by PayPal. I accepted his payment method as I thought it wasn't going to be much trouble and just made this thread for some of my questions to be answered. I'm not trying to get the buyer to pay me via gift, I'm just wondering as this is my first time using PayPal as a seller.

Ohh I am sorry i misread your OP.

By all means then tell him you want it paid via gift if that is what you want.

A buyer can pay via gift using a credit card but fee's will still come out unless its paid via balance. The seller can choose to pay the fee's too. I would be asking him to do so.

And also paypal gifting does not protect you from a credit card chargeback.

    No bother.

It would be better for me as a seller for him to not send the payment as a gift then?
I read something about a chargeback:
"A chargeback happens when a buyer asks their credit card issuer to reverse a transaction that has already cleared. This can mean that a payment you’ve received in your PayPal account could be reversed, even if you’ve already posted the goods – which can of course be frustrating."
Will having a tracking number on the item I send save me from the buyer trying to scam his money back if he claims it has not arrived even though it has?

As a seller gifting is better because the buyer cannot use paypals own chargeback facility but can still use their banks. It doesn't happen that often at all though and you would have to be very unlucky. I mean to say the buyer can choose to pay the fees when sending money in my last post. I would be asking him to do it I meant.

If it were me I would make sure the buyer has some decent feedback on adverts. At least 5 from other sellers.

Another thing to take into account is if he issues a bank chargeback paypal will also charge you an administration fee of I think 45 euro, at least that is what it was when it happened me last a few years ago.

    Hi,

I just received the payment from the buyer. Under the "
Transaction Details " tab it says " OK to ship " and then a green tick and it also says " Payment Status: Completed " beside it. The payment type was instant. Is it ok for me to ship now?

    Thanks.

I would always send the buyer an invoice to his PP email address ( Paypal - request money - create invoice )

take photos all the way in case Paypal act up. Keep receipts of registered post and document everything.

Cash out to the bank and then post!!! Do not leave money in paypal account in case they freeze the account and you lose out on both cash and phone.

Makes no difference. If paypal determine that the money needs to be refunded, you will be pursued for it. And you should not be waiting until the cash is in your bank account. Once it's in your paypal, the item should be posted. As long as you send it tracked, you have nothing to worry about, unless you've been misleading to whoever you sold it to.
