My brother is selling his MX5 which he has had in his garage for quite a while, its 1.6 1992 reg, I wouldnt mind buying it off him, but cant get anyone to insure it as Ive only had my licence a year and havent ever been named on an insurance policy, any ideas on how I could hold on to the car?

I can imagine it would be extortionate at your age. I would imagine 700 hundred-ish provided you have no claims etc. But guessing some-ones insurance is quite tricky. Have you tried getting an online quote for it? Convertibles have a slight loading compared to equivalent hatches etc but I wouldn't imagine it would be huge.

Store it for a year and then get classic car insurance.
Or find someone that will give you 3rd party extension to drive cars not "owned" by you.

A poster on here, Cian Ryan, has a 1990 mx5 similar age and has been able to get quotes but they're ridiculously high.

Id rather not see him sell it, as it has been in the family a good while, plus it might appreciate in value who knows.

Everywhere I tried has turned me down :(

Whats the deal with classic insurance?

the one i was looking at was a 1.8 2001 rs, so probably easier to insure than your 1992

You have to be 25 or over, the milage is limited and the car generally is over 15 years old, although some will insure once it's 10 years old.
Most insurers won't touch older cars!:(

Is it just a myth, or are insurers not required to give you a quote if you can't get one at all????

Albeit an astronomical quote no doubt!?

Another long (and prob expensive) way around is if you get insured on another car, store the mx5 for a year and try swapping your policy over to the mx5 after this time?

Probably not guaranteed but I would imagine most companies would been willing to quote you if you have a track record with them?

Well Im getting rejected online, telling me to ring them, but no doubt it would be astronomical!

Your probably better off ringing them so.

You mite be getting rejected online automatically for some obscure reason that you can explain over the phone?

Yes if you've three letters of refusal they will get you a quote.

I was getting that as well on the 156, all online quotes were refused. When I rang though I was getting very good quotes.

I might give them a buzz so thank you!

Who is most likely to insure the MX5 you reckon?

Liberty among many others flat out dont insure these.I had trouble getting insured on my mk2. A lot of company's seem to have tightened their criteria, "open top" roadsters falling within the undesirable category. Even more-so if it's Jap import.

I've always found XS direct to be ridiculously expensive compared to normal insurance companies. Granted if you're seriously stuck then they might work.

Most importantly, you need to have another car as a daily driver and insurance for it on a "normal" policy. Most if not all classic insurers will want to see your everyday policy before issuing a classic policy.

Try First Ireland, I've always found them good.

Oh yeah the prices are totaloy ridiculous for my normal insurance is like 600 they quote something like 1300 with a 3k or 4k excess however they can get away with it

Any chance someone else could insure it with you as a named driver? My Da has an MX5 and it's a lot of fun to drive.

you also generally need a main car insured in your name as well as the classic.

Your wasting your time with online quotes. Online quotes are designed to quote competitive prices for low risk drivers insuring run of the mill cars. You will need to contact insurance companies and brokers directly.

It also might be worth considering putting the MX-5 in storage, get a cheap run around and build up your claims free driving experience so that insurance companies will more willing to cover you on the MX-5.

In general, a classic policy will only apply to a 20 year or older car. Some companies (I believe) will accept 15 years but that's more the exception that the rule. I have a classic policy with Autoline in Derry. But as stated previously, you need to be over 25 years old and have another daily driver policy. My policy is restricted to 3000 miles per annum but for an increased premium you can have a 5000 mile limit.
