I am looking for feedback on experience with an oil/matt finished engineered floor board vs a laquered finish. One is cheaper than other but floors expert has advised one is as good as other. Any feedback appreciated as I am buying alot of it.

An oiled board is beautiful, but unless you have no children, no pets, & walk around in indoor shoes constantly it is very difficult to maintain - sorry!

Thanks - Im bit worried now given none of the above aplies to me... ie my house is like a zoo in every sense.
is it easily damaged or ok once it is reoiled every few year.

Hi, we have oak semi solid floors at home, i recommend a lacquered finish however, the EPA banned the sales of the i think its the alcohol based lacquer so now its only water base (which isn't great!) is what they use, so if you can get your hands on the good stuff, definitely lacquer! :P

Lacquered shows scratches more though, or so we've been told.
You need to reapply the oil once in a while too.

seems to give an all round honest view - there is give and take between both.
Ive found a fab oiled finish floor - think Ill just throw in a dozen pairs of house slippers at the front door and see how that goes. Oiling every couple of years will keep my man busy too

It is really hard to know. Our floors do scratch however we do a lot of outside work and dirt do be dragged in. We re-lacquer every 2-3 years but i would try and keep away from the water based stuff because it takes nearly 2 weeks until it has dried properly.

If you are going to do the floor boards in a home with pets, kids etc, Then the only choice is a good oil based varnish, like Yacht varnish for example. Simply because it is a hard (shell like) covering. Whilst it is true that the floor can scratch, most scratches can be removed by simply lightly compounding the offending spot and then re-polish (buff up) with a soft cloth.

Whilst oil application is good the servicing is constant and frankly IMO not worth the hassle. I have little faith in water based varnishes especially when used for such a job.

    Hope this helps

I got the matt oil and just to let you know they are a total disaster and I wouldnt recommend to anyone with a busy household. filthy and simply cant be cleaned - water ruins them and after 1 month since installation they are like 15 years old...these were not cheap either.
