Old Job Had Wrong PPS Number

I rang Revenue before Xmas just to see if I was owed anything (I've always been above board in paying PAYE/PRSI/USC, so was confident I didn't owe them anything).

However, they had no record of my last job before my current one, which I was in for nearly 2 years. Got in contact with payroll in that company and it turns out they had an incorrect PPS number for me.

I'm now a bit worried that all the tax I paid while there either got paid in someone else's name or went into a metaphorical black hole...

Anyone know where I'd stand on this?

find that hard to believe, a wrong pps number wouldn't match up with a correct name (yours)

Did you ask them what they proposed to do to resolve the issue.

Indeed, when the company performed their P35 returns, that PPSN would have been rejected as being incorrect. PPSNs include check digits, so you can't mistype one digit on it and accidentally put in someone else's PPSN.

Either way, if the previous company has been retaining and paying your PAYE, it's a simple matter for the amounts to be transferred to your PPSN.

While in theory you are personally liable for any non-payment of tax, if you were receiving payslips from the company showing your tax deductions, then I can't see revenue chasing you for the money, since your previous employer did deduct it from you. Afaik you are only liable if your employer fails to deduct the tax.

Thanks for the advice, I'll get on to them once I've seen my statement of earnings (which I've requested from them on the advice of Revenue after my initial phone call from them). At least when I see that I'll be able to see if they simply mis-typed my PPSN or have a totally different one.

I'd assumed as much, that they would have to match my number with my name

I got my statement of earnings from my old job-not only do they have a totally incorrect PPS number for me, but they also have my date of birth completely wrong. I have no idea where they got either from, as it wasn't from me.

Should I approach them or Dept of Social Welfare first...?

Did they even get your name and address spelt correctly.

If there is a revenue or tax office near you then I would nearly start there.

Bring the statement of earnings with the wrong pps number and also a p45/p35 or p60 with your correct pps number on it with you and see what they say.

If you got the statement of earnings from your employer than more than likely it is a clerical error on the employers side and nothing to do with Revenue. Get in contact with your previous employer and query it.
