Advice Required

    Hey,

    Looking for some advise here.
Just back from being away for a year and have to get a car.
    Budget is EUR5,000
Will be doing about 200 motorway miles a week and then prob 70-100 tipping around rural and city roads.
I dont really mind if its petrol or diesel, I prefer diesel but if it makes more financial sense to go petrol then thats fine with me.
I want a decent sized car but to be honest I dont want to go larger size (A4/Avensis types)
Trying to get to 2007 if possible.
Have been looking at Skoda Octavia's and Volkswagen Jetta's.

Has anyone any experience of these two cars (in either 1.4 petrol or 1.9 diesel)
Either of them to be steered clear of or anything major to look out for with them. Skoda seems better value, jettas seem to be slightly dearer.
Any nice comfortable car of similar spec I'm forgetting? Looked at S40's as well but I've been scared off by others talking about brutal electrics.
Any advise at all is very very welcome.

    THanks

Is prefer a Jetta over an Octavia personally. It's a nicer car to travel in and drive.

As with any VW group diesel you're looking at high enough miles. If you can find an unmolested one a B6 A4 1.9 tdi would be worth a look too.

Tbh I can't see you get either a jetta or octavia 2007 diesel for 5k euro and if you do it will probably be a rough high mileage example. So with the tight budget you may be better of to get a petrol version. Both are good cars. My parents have two Octavia's a 1.9tdi and 1.6tdi and there good cars. My aunty has a 1.6 tdi 10 reg jetta old model and she loves it and seems like a nice car. I personally don't like the loon of the jetta on the outside and much prefer the golf but that's just me.

You will get a better petrol car for your €5k than diesel imo.

    Something like this:

They are very good on fuel for a 1.8 litre, plenty of room and hardly ever give trouble.

Id imagine a decent a4 is out of my price range?

Saw a few Octavia's on donedeal for under the €5k mark, but then nothing on carzone comes near as competitively priced. Am I to assume these are all wrecked as I've no experience of using DD for a car?

DD is better to find a car I don't use carzone anymore as it is fools with way over priced cars mainly dealers.

Find a car you like call owner and if it sounds right bring a mechanic let them check it over and if all good buy it once you make sure all vin numbers match and I would recommend buying from owners address not a car park as this is a bad idea and if it's to good to be true it usually is.

What sort of mileage do you plan on doing and are they long/short trips. This would be the deciding factor for petrol or diesel.

    Best of luck.

Ill prob do 2 120KM motorway trips a week and then about 25KM city driving a day 5 days a week.

Not much more than that. Which would you recommend Petrol/Diesel. (if it is to be petrol would I want to be upping to 1.6 or would 1.4 do)?

    Thanks

Would that machine eat up petrol?

You can find the facts and figures for those MK5 Jettas here - http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/facts-and-figures/volkswagen/jetta/saloon-2006/

The 1.6 8v 5 speed in them is an absolute dog on juice when you're on the motorway. It will cost you at the pumps.

I'm just firing out different cars here, but what would that be like. I rarely ever have anyone in the back of the car, so the 2 seats wouldnt really bother me. I assume the diesel vans would be reasonable on juice. Regards comfort, is there any difference between doing decent miles in a commercial against a regular car?

    Cheers

I wouldn't. Those aren't the most reliable of diesel engines.
