    Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade my modest stereo to something more impressive and bespoke. I'm not looking for anything too fancy or high end, just something packed with features and which represents good value. I'm looking for the following spec:
    - Streaming (ipod and pc)
    - IPod connection
    - Internet radio
    - CD (not super critical but would like to have the option)
    - Decent speakers
    - The ability to expand in the future
    - DAB and Bluetooth nice but not essencial

I've done a bit of research and all seem to be pointing towards Denon Ceol Piccolo (DRA-N5) without CD or the Denon Ceol (RCD-N8BK) with CD which is more expensive. I've seen deals on amazon for both with Denon's own speakers. My questions are as follows:
    - Is it worth going for the N8 over the N5 just for the addition of a CD player? Would it be better value than going for the N5 and adding a separate CD player later?
    - What speakers would you recommend pairing with either system? Are Denon's SC-N5 speakers any good or is it worth paying a bit more for something else?
    - What would be your best price system and speaker packages for both Denon systems including delivery to Dublin?
    - Is there any other system and speaker package for similar money and spec (with or without CD) that you would recommend and what would be your best deal?
    - Is it worth spending the extra on a Denon system over say the cheaper Sony CMTG2BNIP of similar spec?
    - Can I pay in Sterling online If ordering for delivery to Dublin?

I would be willing to stretch my budget to a system with CD and good speakers if the deal was tempting enough! I appreciate that there are a lot of queries there so I thank you in advance for your help. Looking forward to hearing from you.

    All the best,

    Marcus

Both the Ceol and the Piccolo are excellent systems - however the matching speakers really are not great and you would be far better off matching these systems with speakers from specialist manufacturers like Q Acoustics, Cambridge AUdio or Monitor Audio.
    - What speakers would you recommend pairing with either system? Are Denon's SC-N5 speakers any good or is it worth paying a bit more for something else?
For the Piccolo I would use the Tannoy V1 or the Cambridge Audio S20 or s30 - if would like to keep the stylish White or black gloss finish then I'd use either the Q Acoustics 2010i in Gloss or better still to keep the look and the scale the Monitor Audio new Radius 90 - pricing as follows:

    Piccolo / Tannoy V1 - £294.95/ €364.99
    Piccolo / Cambridge S20 - £279.95 / €339.99
    Piccolo/ Cambridge Audio S30 - £299.95 / €369.99 ( great sounding combo!)
    Piccolo / Q Acoustic 2010i Gloss - £329.95 / €399.99
    Piccolo / Monitor Audio New Radius 90 - £399.95 / €489.99

    - What would be your best price system and speaker packages for both Denon systems including delivery to Dublin?
    Ceol / Monitor Audio Reference 1 - £419.95/ €509.99
    Ceol/ Cambridge Audio S30 - £419.95 / €509.99
    Ceol  / Q Acoustic 2010i  - £429.95 / €533.99
    Ceol / Monitor Audio New Radius 90 - £529.95 / €649.99

    Ceol/ Monitor Audio BX2 - £499.95 / €599.99

    - Is there any other system and speaker package for similar money and spec (with or without CD) that you would recommend and what would be your best deal?
I really like the TEAC CRH700DAB http://www.richersounds.com/product/mini-hi-fi/teac/crh700dab/teac-crh700dab-blk its a great looking system and also sounds really great - its full feature, including Apple Airplay, Wifi, CD, Internet radio, DAB, DLNA, USB - it doesnt have a dock ( but you can of course use the USB or Airplay) - for pricing just take £30 off any of the price as above
    - Is it worth spending the extra on a Denon system over say the cheaper Sony CMTG2BNIP of similar spec?

To be honest I'm not familiar with the Sony system so it would be unfair to pass judgement - but the Denon's are really well reviewed across the board.
    - Can I pay in Sterling online If ordering for delivery to Dublin?
    No problem, of course

    Hi John,

Thanks for the prompt  reply. Unfortunately this is a significant purchase for me so I have a few more questions!

Firstly, can you explain the figures before and after the backslash that you have quoted for the ceol and piccolo? I'm hoping the 1st figure is the package price as the second seems high compared to what i have seen quoted on other threads and other suppliers. Do the prices include delivery and cables/plugs for hooking the system up?

Secondly, if i wanted black gloss to match the finish of the ceol, am I restricted to the QA2010i? and if so, would these be good speakers to do the Denon justice? is the 2020i worth the extra? WHat would be up from the QA2010i that would have the gloss finish?

Thirdly, I think i will go for the ceol over the piccolo because of the CD but I am torn between the ceol and the TEAC. In your expert opinion, is the Denon a better unit in terms of reliability, features and sound quality even though the TEAC is slightly cheaper and has DAB? Which is more future proof? Can both be expanded for surround sound, sub woofer, AV, etc, etc?

    Thanks again for the help!

    Regards,

    Marcus

    Hi Marcus,

Thanks for getting back to us.

Looking at the pricing delivery and cable etc would be separate.  Delivery would cost just £12.99 on either option and cable starts from 99p per meter and banana plugs start from £4.99 a pair.

On the speaker front the 2020is would be a great option.  Fantastic sounding speaker.  Another speaker to check out would be the Dali Zensor 1s.  I'd still much prefer the Q Acoustics.  Nice low end for such a small speaker.

Over the two systems for sound quality alone it has to be the Denon, hands down.  Neither would offer surround sound unfortunately.  You'd be looking at an AV receiver for this.  The Denon does have an optical input so you could connect your TV straight into it.

Both good units but the Denon would defiantly be my choice.

    Hope this has helped.

    Chris

    Chris/John,

I thought I'd replied already but thanks again for the latest reply. I'm pretty close to deciding what to do but still need a bit more advice. Here are my latest queries:
    - for pairing with the denon ceol n8, would you go for the qa2010i, qa2020i or monitor audio bx2?
    - for each speaker option above can you give me your best price including delivery to dublin, cables and plugs?
    - how long does delivery take?

    Thanks again for the help....

    Regards,

    Marcus

    Marcus,

the BX2 are significantly the best sounding option - the 2020i's do sound good as well but people normally go for these in the high gloss finish if they are concerned about the appearance over the sound as the 2020's are available in gloss white and gloss black to perfectly match the appearance of the Ceol - however again, the BX2 do match the Ceol better and convey detail and bass better.

    Ceol RCDN8 / QA 2010i Graphite - £429.95
    Ceol RCDN8 / QA 2020i Graphite - £469.95
    Ceol RCDN8 / BX2 Black / Walnut / Rosewood / Oak - £499.95

On the cable front - I'd recommend a decent speaker cable without going overboard - something like the Cambridge Audio Symphony 200 at £1.49 / Meter -if you want to upgrade then I'd highly recommend the QED Ruby Anniversary XT, its more expensive at £5.49/ mtr ( better with your Boardie discount though :)) -  we also do the matching Cambridge Audio Banana plugs at £4.99/ pair, but I'm not convinced you need them - better to buy an additional meter of speaker cable and cut the oxidised ends every few months - we do a 25% off deal for Boardies on most cables and plugs so you can select your length and plugs and we will reprice them for you no problem.

Thanks again and keep us posted if we can assist,

Thanks again and keep us posted if we can assist,

    Hi John,

Thanks as ever for the speedly response. Based on what you have advised me, I think I am in a position to decide on the system and speaker package. I've done a bit of checking around, including other threads on Boards. Here is a link to a thread which is would be ideal for me.

Basically, can you offer me the same deal as this poster recently, i.e. the ceol RCDN8 with BX2 speakers for £449 (or you're welcome to improve it!!). I would hope that you could include the cabling, plugs and delivery as requested by this poster. If you can do me a similarly good deal then I will purchase straight away. Note that this stretches my original budget but based on the advice you have given I'm hoping that it is worth it and that you can cut me a good deal. I am very greatful to the help so far so would be great if we could do business.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Best regards,

    Marcus

    Marcus,

No problem  - I'll match that price no problem - including the Monitor audio BX2 / Ceol RCDN8 - £449.95 - I'll do 4 mtrs of 105 strand decent cable with the package as well to get you started. As per my post above - I wouldnt worry about the plugs - they really dont enhance the audio quality..

Thanks again and keep me posted - if you would like to go ahead please just drop me a PM or a mail with your contact details to sales@richersounds.ie and I'll get one of the guys to give you a call to get the order delivered for you.
