Any advice on a make of a good quality photoscanner for old photos/negatives please and what would be a reasonable price?

scanning old negs - the consensus seems to be the epson perfection v500. about €200, i think.

Epson v500 will do you fine. If you have no plans to scan medium format the Plustek 8100 is meant to be decent as well and might suit you better as a dedicated 35mm scanner.

I have the v500 and it's working out grand for me. I have no colour film on me but I could upload a scan of a black and white negative if you wanted.
