Can I drive a uk reg car when I bring it in or do I have to wait until the VRT is paid?
If I come up to a checkpoint am I in a bit of bother or will I be waved through?
I plan on getting it done in the next two to three weeks.

Also if I have a car that's currently out of tax but hasn't been declared off the road yet do I have to back tax it before selling it or will a transfer of ownership cancel it out?

You have to make a booking for a vrt assessment within 7 days of taking the car into Ireland.
You have to register the car within 30 days of bringing it into the country

Change of ownership will effectively cancel out any arrears.
