I recently went through the NDLS to have my drivers license replaced . Around 4 weeks ago . . I was given a document with my drivers license number on it . And was told to expect my new license in a few weeks . Lately I've been shopping around for insurance quotes and I am beginning to think that I might not get insured as I don't acutally have my license physically at hand . I rang the NDLS and was told to expect my license soon as its currently processing ., which could mean another 4 weeks !! Anyways has anyone else had this situation ?

You can typically get the insurance set up without any issues and a few weeks grace period if you let the company know this ahead of time. Some will request that you send them a copy of the receipt for your new licence beforehand, others won't mind as much. All will likely request that you send this before they send you out any documentation confirming your insurance, though. It's highly unlikely for them to send you the cert and disc until they get a copy of your new licence, but in the mean-time they will be able to send you a 'cover letter'* which Gards are very used to seeing at checkpoints, etc and never really have much issue with.

A printed letter on headed paper stating "this letter is to confirm that Colash is insured to drive the vehicle registration 141-D-12345 from Jan 1, 2014 - Dec 31, 2014, on a comprehensive policy underwritten by AXA/Allianz/Zurich/whoever." You can also ask them to state named drivers on, if you have any (if open driving, it should state that beside 'comprehensive, TPFT, third party, etc').

It's not a big issue - there was a huge backlog for licences about a year back when they switched it over, so just tell them that beforehand and they'll let you know their policy. Nobody is going to realistically turn away business over it, it's actually a really trivial matter (though I can see why you would be concerned).

That sounds like bulls*** on Aviva's part by and large, have you sent them a copy of the receipt for it or any proof of purchase? A lot of the time in insurance, people don't allow things do be done that are 100% perfectly fine and permissible because they only worried about covering their own asses and absolutely nothing else. Kind of like if someone in a pub refused to serve someone clearly, visibly in their 40s without ID because they 'might' be under-age, to draw an analogy.

Them ending you out your cert and disc would be a different matter, though.

I was under the impression insurers were given access to the NDLS database, hence why online quotes ask for your driver licence number. So why can't they confirm your licence in the database with your driver licence number? It seems a bit backwards that they require a photocopy of the new RFID embedded licence after so much computerisation of the NDLS

I was under the exact same impression . Although one company I rang said I would certainly need to send in a copy of the front and back of my license . I never mentioned to them about not physically having one as of yet as I was sure it would be here by now . According to the NDLS . Surely quoting my license number would be sufficient enough to take out a policy ?

I don't know if that has gone through yet or not, but as of August at least it wasn't the case. It was in scripting to ask for a licence number, but nobody did and just put in 1234567890 . It wasn't worth holding someone up when it made absolutely no difference to their quote, and sure when a copy of the licence came in it would have the number on it anyway.

As for penalty points, that would also show on the licence when they send it in and would be asked at the start of any quote. If someone says they don't have points and do, it will be found out about quite easily. 4pp's or less will make pretty much no difference anywhere, 6-8 depending on the insurer also won't be too significant (though best to clear first as some won't quote for it).

I applied for my renewal of my licence in November and still haven't received it ! Was stopped over the holidays and Garda got a little shi*ty about me driving without my licence, was told to produce but haven't gotten it yet so went in to let them know and first Garda I met was telling me I would be charged for driving without a licence ! asked for his superior and was told forget about the whole thing as the NDLS is really backed up ! Powertrip or what by first 2 guys ?

I have never shown my insurance company my licence. They just asked for NCB and that was all.

    Why do you say that?

AGS have access to NDLS but can still ask you to produce your physical licence at a Garda station if you're not carrying it. Does that sounds like bulls*** on the Guard's part?

Probably not a power trip by the first2 Gardai. It is very probable they didn't even know of the back log.
