The 40 is the only route I know that goes to Liffey Valley from the city centre. You can board it on O'Connell Street outside Burger King or on D'Olier Street. You're probably better off getting off at B&Q because it goes through Neilstown and Rowlagh after that - you'd walk it quicker!

The 25a or 25b is the best. 10 mins... Get off at the footbridge and walk across

Under no circumstances should you take the 40, unless you wish to lose the will to live. I really cannot understand why people keep recommending one of the slowest (and lets be honest dodgiest) routes for this journey.

The 25a and 25b operate every 15 minutes and operate via the Chapelizod by-pass taking 15-20 minutes from Aston Quay. Alternatively, the 66/a/b and 67 from Westmoreland Street will also take you there in about 20-25 minutes. Get off any of these buses at the first stop after the M50 and you have a 5 minute maximum walk back up the ramp to the centre entrance.

The reason people probably recommend it is the fact the 40 goes around with it on the front, so people automatically assume (wrongly) that it is the bus to get.

Its not wrong if the bus does goes into Liffey Valley.

The OP did ask for the *best* route, in which case the 25a/b seems superior both in terms of travel time and safety.

I know that, i didnt suggest otherwise.

The bridge/ramp up from the N4 bus stop mysteriously also has a barrier to obstruct you from walking to the centre for some bizarre reason. If it was to force you to use a pedestrian crossing it would make sense, but it doesn't.

It is to force you to use the pedestrian crossing after the roundabout - crossing two rather than three lanes and also on to the centre's paths rather than through a gap in a hedge.

I see it now off up the road. I always had a tendency towards the other end as the fence is shorter.

I used to go through the gap in the hedge :pac: (that barrier is easily hoppable at my height)

The 40 is the closest to Liffey Valley, but longest..and dodgiest. 40 can also be fast depending on its load and frequency/time of day.

The fact remains it still takes far longer than the 25a/25b or any of the 66/a/b or 67.

I can say this from experience!!!
