I bought this car on ebay, a 1984 refurbished defender 90, and it turns out the seller is now in the US and wants to sell via power of attorney as he has been redeployed(US army officer) i have spoken to him and am comfortable hes not a nigerian prince in his spare time

no massive issue with this but he has given me the option not to continue with the sale and has also agreed to split the cost of an inspection to make sure all is as he has promised prior to payment.

I bid 6k stg for the car does anyone have a view on whether it's good value i certainly couldnt find many with that sort of a spec and vintage(v imp for road tax) and whether its worth the money/ risk of continuing on with this odd situation

Not much to their ebay profile but it was created in 2003 which I would find unusual if this was a scam.

    I'd leave it alone myself.

    eBay.

    Foreign seller.

    Questionable story regarding sale.

Id run a mile. Might be legit; are you prepared to gamble €8k to find out?

    I would be 50/50 on if it's a scam , but I wouldn't risk my money.

As long as you can get it independently inspected I couldn't see a problem with buying it. As to whether it will end up being good value is another matter by the time vrt and other costs are taken into consideration. If it was me I'd personally take a cheap flight over and look at it and the paperwork myself.

Strange situation alright. His feedback as a buyer does show a lot from mp trading which is a landrover parts supplier. Id want to see it in person before Id handover anything.

I'd at least check if it is eligible for vin/vet road tax. The '30 years' might not actually kick in till 2015.

if its 30 years old why wouldnt it be eligible for vintage status i.e no VRT and 50e road tax

Because I think the original date of registration/manufacture applies. So, say for argument sake the car left the factory in December 1984, and was registered a few days later, then it will not officially be '30' till December 2014.
So importing the car anytime before that date will make it a 29 year old vehicle. Vin/Vet rules of importation and tax will not apply.
Open to correction on this, but I seem to remember back in 1997 trying to re classify a 1967 car, I was informed I'd have to wait till 1998 to have it re-classified as vin/vet. I'd originally bought the car in 1989.

A simple call to your local motor tax office or NCT centre should be able to clarify things.

Only 1980 cars and before are exempt from NCT, cars 30 years and older get the cheap tax at 56euro a year.

Main downside I see is that you may be liable for some (not a lot) vrt and possibly some non vintage road tax to make it legal. I'm guessing it would need to be 30 years old from the date of first registration.

If it's a scam it's not the usual one. Usual scam means viewing the car is next to impossible and a complete absence of paper work to back everything up. If this has all the paperwork and receipts to back up all the claimed work done then it could be a good one.

I can't believe someone would go to all that trouble, and still put those seriously bad brake pipes back onto it.
Body could be rotten, old rusty nuts and bolts reused, Thats just from one pic.

How can the age of this land rover be established for certainty. I thought the chassis stamp identified the build date?

hairypigeon I cant see any big deal being involved in the purchase of the Landy as you must have thought its reasonably good value to put that bid on. Even if it was listed as being only one year old you don't know if it even there until you get over , any guy could take a few photos and list it and demand a deposit within 24 hours. I have been over many times and never part with cash until I am completely satisfied with the vehicle. If you think its as described, his friend has the V5 and all numbers match I cant see a problem. Going over with 8 grand in your pocket you should bring a friend with you just to be on the safe side. A cheap flight and train up or a ship and rail ticket will take you there. With regards to the V5 make sure you get it off him and leave the purple section which says its being exported. Let us know how you get on.

Hi red I think you're right I'm going to arrange the inspection and go from there but I bid on it in good faith and would like to think I'm a man of my word I'll let you know

Vrt is still due on a 30 year old car, it's €200, motor tax is €56 a year and if the car is not pre 1980 it's needs an nct every year.
