no minimum of 3 months has to be paid. You could tax it for 6 months and then try and claim back the remaining 5 months, there is some way of doing it if you are leaving the country, best off to ask in the tax office if you were going that route.

You need a minimum of 3 months tax left on your car to claim it back. S o your only option is to take a chance & claim it off the road & drive it till then & hope you dont get pulled. I would say people are doing it already as i have seen cars with tax out in shopping centers .

I believe you unofficially get one months grace anyway.

If you get caught at a checkpoint you might be able to appeal to a Garda's good nature alright but it's unlikely you'll get any such discretion if a Traffic Warden sees your car untaxed.

But say i go to the guards on jan 17th and say the cars gonna be off the road. Wont they expect to see a tax disc for january?

You dont go to the garda now, you've to go the tax office to declare it off the road, you missed out on this month as you have to declare it of the road the month previous to the renewal date, you have to go now and declare it off from February, unless you get a nice enough tax office employee who will let you include January

If your declaring it off the road anyway that needs to be done three months in advance so your going to be liable for three months tax when you go to put it back on the road.

If thats the case you may aswell pay the three months now.

    Open to correction.

    From..
    https://www.motarviews.ie/ORD/faq

    FAQ section...
Q2. If my vehicle is not in use, when do I need to declare it off the road?
A2. You must make your off the road declaration in advance. The declaration must be made in the month of expiry of your current motor tax disc. All correctly completed applications will receive confirmation of their transaction, either by post or on the spot if the declaration is submitted in person at your local motor tax office.

Q3. Can I do it after tax has expired?
A3. No, it must be done in advance. If arrears in motor tax are due, these must be paid in full and motor tax paid for a minimum of 3 months before a declaration of non-use may be made. However, see Q14 below in respect of newly purchased vehicles (new or second hand). .

I leave the country on jan 18th. My tax is up today. What are my options with regards paying my tax? Can i pay for a month. Or can i be reimbursed when i declare it off the road?

I would say it all depends on how long are you leaving the country for?
How long and where will the car be standing, outdoors or in a garage?

you will have to pay for January away now eventually. You needed to declare it of the road before the tax ran out (Ignore doing it three months n advance!)

I think you'll have to tax it now for three months and at the end of that declare it off. Otherwise you'll be liable to all the back tax. The only other option would be if it changed hands which would wipe out the back tax.

If your tax has just expired (Dec '13) , then it's due for renewal prior or during Jan'14 as will be stated on the renewal form.

In your case, I would send off the "off road declaration" form after you leave, declaring it off the road from Jan'14 to Jan'15.
