Buying an economical diesel

    Hi,

I want to sell or trade in my 03 Hyundai Coupe 1.6 for an economical diesel. I've been doing a good bit of research to try and find the most economical and reliable diesel going. Say I get €1500 for the Hyundai the max I'd be putting along with that would be €6500, that's my max budget!

I was looking at the Toyota Auris 1.4 diesel as an option, 07 would my price max.

Would this be as reliable as a diesel gets in my price range or is there something more suitable I'm overlooking?

It'll be a mix of short runs and motorway (Galway - Dundalk, twice a week).

    All suggestions greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

Why not stick with Hyundai and look at the i30 or it's sister car the Kia Ceed?

    what's your annual mileage?

It's a key questions I have learned on these threads as diesels can have costly issues and so need to be planned for when you are budgeting your savings.

those auris weren't great where quality is concerned and certainly a step back from it's predecessor.

If you want a good diesel Toyota go back a year and get a corolla hatchback instead. They have the same engine as the auris but they are a nicer and better built car in comparison.

other good options have already been mentioned such as the kia cee'd and Hyundai i30. Both share the same very good 1.6 crdi engine which is a very reliable unit. The cars themselves are very well built too.

id be avoiding anything fitted with a psa 1.6hdi/tdci engine.

I'd be looking at something like this

I also agree completely with johnboys post above

Thanks for all the suggestions, very helpful, ya I've heard good things about the Hyundai i30 all right. Is there any problems with them I should be asking about when buying? Also are they economical? Am I right in assuming I am I better off paying the same money for a 08 i30 than 06 corolla with higher mileage?

Corolla diesels go for silly money, even high mileage one and most of them are very basic spec. The i30 is a slightly newer design and just as reliable. They are just as economical as other diesel cars of similar size.

look to me that that the garage that are selling the i30 are a bit of dodgy. when there are selling bmw and trying to pass it off as a private sale

    How do you figure that?

    How do you figure that?

go to done deal ad click on "see all ads from this seller" .edit just google the garage and it a main dealer so probably ok

I don't think the seller is hiding the fact that they are a garage, you can see the showroom and business name in the advert.

Figured a Hyundai garage would like a coupe as a trade in.

Hi again, didn't end up getting that particular car. Going to test drive a 2010 Hyundai i30 1.6 90BHP ECO. Looking at probably 9000 with my own. What do ye guys think, a good deal?

I was originally looking at 2008's, but its very hard to get anything under 100,000 miles in that bracket! I'm thinking spending a bit more with lower mileage might be a better bet!?

That's nearly 50% more expensive than the 08.
Granted there's a bit of manufacturers warranty left but any decent garage would give you 12 months either way,
