Wouldn't call that a bargain in the slightest.

It's not a conventional tablet as such as it has a desktop processor (i5) and also has a full version of windows installed - it's the closest thing you're going to get to a highish spec laptop in tablet form

Not bad value imo, nice to use

You'd get a far superior laptop for that price.

Indeed but not with that formfactor, try to find anything similar in spec with a full version of windows, the pro 2 is 1,000€

300 euro more for the Surface Pro 2 - 128GB.
3.5 hours more in battery life and a much better CPU, but I would not pay 900 euro for it, not sure if it is worth.
An amazing device but let down by Windows 8.1.

DELL Venue 8 Pro .. 8" screen, Quad Core Atom (latest gen), full Windows 8.1, 32GB storage... €299 (fantastic tablet for the money.. I bought one :))

Also a Venue Pro 11 with i5 options for a few hundred more but it comes with a lot more expansion options

Been using the Dell venue pro 11 for a while now. A really great tablet and definitely a complete replacement for the laptop (i purchased a keyboard as well). Windows 8 is grand once you get used to it and a must for the touch screen.
Hopefully the internal MS shake up will make 8.2 update worth the wait.

Think this is a decent price for the Surface in fairness, and is the closest one can get to a Laptop replacement in Tablet form if that's your thing, with the decent processor and full Windows. Reviews for the device are quite good, and once compared to an Ultrabook or an iPad, you'll see the price is fairly decent. Only problem is that the price doesn't include the Keyboard cover which would put me off as it's almost an essential addon for the device.

Intel Atom CPUs are very underwhelming, certainly nowhere near comparable to i5's.

I know it's much cheaper, but a quad core does not even come close to an i5. Also much mess storage. It's a brilliant price for what is the full Windows experience though.

While the i5 is undoubtedly the better processor for crunching numbers, the bay trail chips offer more than enough performance for typical tablet tasks and even stuff like office, provided you don't go crazy, they aren't like the horrible Atoms of days gone by, Bay trail is getting good reviews across the board. Whats really good is that it seems to be the first x86 chip with solid performance, runs at a reasonable temperature, is cheap, can fit in a small & light form factor and has a decent battery life. Given all that, Kaisers suggestion is more than reasonable if you are looking for something even more portable or in a lower price bracket, the venue is priced aggressively. I would also toss in the Asus Transformer T100 as another budget alternative.

To me, the Surface Pro (and Pro 2) feel that bit too heavy & hot to really qualify as a tablet, just my two cents anyway.

You'd get a far superior desktop to a laptop for that price -> the post doesn't make sense, a laptop is not a tablet, a desktop is not a laptop. It's a powerful tablet and does look like a good deal, could run a range of programs on that that other tablets could not and will have better longevity.

What is the difference between the surface and surface pro? Speed? Slickness? What?

You can connect USB connections to it I assume they give you connecting ports?

Surface uses ARM CPUs and windows RT which can not run standard applications that you'd expect to run on a windows environment. You are reliant on apps and programs designed for the system.

Surface Pro uses Intel CPUs and a full windows operating system. It runs everything that you would expect a windows PC to do.

    Cheers. Makes sense.

SurfaceRT is for Internet browsing, photos, FB, MS Office (comes with it) and other basic consumption tasks. There are RT apps for the most 50 popular tablet apps available today. As other posts point out Surface Pro is a power Core I5 based tablet that can run everything.

I love my Surface RT. Go everywhere with it. I will get a Pro soon for Visual Studio.
