Hi all, looking to upgrade from 6 year old Dell laptop and a desktop iQon from tesco circa 2004/05. Have never built a PC before but would prefer to give it a go and hopefully have a better machine, than buy off the shelf. The PC will be for college work researching, assignments etc, web browsing, storing family photos video etc. The hard drive on the iqon got corrupted and became unusable but it does have a cd/dvd drive that may still work. The old case is 14.25 inches H, 7.5 inches W, 16 inches D, don't know if it can be used or any of the internals.

    1. What is your budget? €500

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Internet, college research assignments etc, family photos video,

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? DVD Drive/Case possibly

    5. Do you need a monitor? Yes

5a. If yes, what size do you need. 22-24 if possible

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? [1920x1080/1440x900/etc.] [Yes/No]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Wireless Card,Card Reader

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? No

    8. How can you pay? Credit card

    9. When are you purchasing? Before end of Jan

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? probably, South Roscommon, between Ballinasloe and Athlone

I would appreciate any feedback, thanks G

Bump, Any suggestions for this build?

You could probably reuse the case but I am throwing one in anyway as you might as well upgrade to external USB3.0 while you are at it.

This will never make a gaming rig but if you did want the option in the future I'd add another €10-15 for a 400-450W PSU instead.

    Item|Price
    Windows 8.1 64Bit Eng Intl (SB-Version) DVD|€83.85
    ASUS VS228NE|€99.00
    Cooler Master Force 500 Midi-Tower - schwarz, ohne Netzteil|€36.15
    Corsair VS Serie VS350, Non-Modular, 80+|€29.36
    MSI H81M-P33, mATX, Sockel 1150|€40.73
    Intel Pentium G3420 Box, LGA1150|€55.88
    2 x 4GB G.Skill PC3-10667U CL9-9-9-24|€64.70
    WD Blue 1TB 6Gb's|€51.27
    Akasa AK-ICR-07 Interner 6-Port Card Reader 8,89cm (3,5") , schwarz|€9.99
LogiLink Wireless LAN 300 Mbps PCI Karte 802.11n 2T2R|€13.53
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€503.45

Incidentially if you can spare another €20 I'd go for an LG IPS monitor instead of the ASUS

Marco thanks for that, Would be happier with the LG for the extra, will the old DVD drive be compatible with this set up? Thanks again G

use this trick .It will knock a few quid off the cost ,could use it to add the more powerful PSU or LG monitor.

Meant to say you'd need to check if it is SATA or IDE, you can get an adapter if its is IDE, but it'd nearly be as cheap to get a new SATA drive as they are only about €15 anyway :)

Thats a nice build Marco,I am going to build something similar to the one you posted but don't need window's or a monitor. Will add a SSD and a different processor.

I just tried the CPU / mobo and HDD and could see them (lots of scrolling required for some of them though). Only 1-2 euro off most items but every little helps.

still works and will save you a few quid.Might not be major savings but for the sake of a few minutes scrolling well worth it.

I saved around €15 on a €450 build a few months ago so I guess you would get similar.

I won't be able to see the contents of your basket, can you use the basket script or grab a screenshot. :)

    Is this worth it?
    Order Defective-pixel test
You can let us carry your TFT/LED-articles in your basket through a Defective-pixel test easily. Therefor you should know, that there are specific classes for TFT-Displays (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defective_pixel). Within these test, we detect all defective pixel on your ordered TFT-Item in brand new condition and prevent you from disappointments and returns.

For that service w'll bill you overall 20,00 € for each TFT/LED-article in your basket

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 10,088 Mod ✭✭✭✭marco_polo

Build looks good, I don't think I would bother myself with the pixel test as it seems a bit expensive relative to the risk but up to yourself really

Edit : on phone now so can't link but search for xfx core 450w on hwvs and that would be a fine psu

Thanks Marco, what PSU 400-450W do you think, I'm at 486 euro with the discounts applied all in at the moment. G

No gaming? You could just go with this, it should last a long time as a general purpose home PC. SSD is definately worth it IMO. As above throw in the XFX PSU if you would like to throw in a GPU down the road.

I though there was a post a few week ago where somebody said they wouldn't accept it from Ireland, I could be wrong or misremembering though. Build looks absolutely fine a slightly better case likle the 200r is much nicer to work with so I wouldn't be worry about spending a extra few quid there if you can.

Could have been mentioned alright,I don't mind paying by transfer anyways.

Cheers for the help/advice really appreciate it.Be ordering that set up in the morning.
Building it myself ,did a few with a mate before but am looking forward to doing it solo this time.:D

How long before 8gb of RAM is not enough. 3 years maybe. i remember when 8mb of RAM was loads (circa. 1992) . Go for 16gb, and save yourself throwing out the 2 x 4gbs in a few years .

No, wait until it's not enough then buy two 8gbs and sell the two 4s. RAM is expensive enough atm and the price will only fall. Future proofing pcs is not cost effective.

One or two things spring to mind, there is a cable coming from the front usb ports that has to connected to the motherboard, is that connected?

Also did you download and install the usb drivers for the motherboard?

Some boards support usb 2.0 from the off but not usb 3.0, some need drivers for it

Yaba any joy on the USB issue?, I am still waiting on mine screen was backordered, dispatched today had to order another stick of ram only ordered one the first time, couldn't add to the existing order so had to pay another 12 euro for shipping hope it is worth it. Will update when I get the bits in and start building.

Yeah I got it sorted out ,I thought I had downloaded all the drivers but I re did them and problem solved.Very happy with the build.

Unless you got a very good price on the ram would it not be handier to cancel the order and buy the ram from somewhere with cheaper postage?

Glad to hear you got it sorted, all incl shipping is 45 euro for 4GB G.Skill PC3-10667U CL9-9-9-24, not sure how that compares elsewhere I did look on Amazon.co.UK for that specific one and couldn't find it. Do they have to be identical to be compatible?

Bluetooth is simple. Amazon have lots of USB Bluetooth adapters. They're about a tenner. Make sure it's over v4.0 and Class 2 should suffice as it's just in your home.

You need to list your current gear for people to suggest upgrades.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Throw in a 2nd hand i5-4440 or similar for €60-70, add another cheap 4GB of ram, and throw in a 250GB SSD and you'll be flying.

If you're just web browsing and using office, then for now literally just an SSD will make a huge difference, 4GB of ram is still pretty much OK and the CPU is still good for those tasks.
