Would I be mad buying a Carrera mountain bike for around €350?

Carrera's are good budget bikes. I've a Carrera Gryphon Disk that I got about 3 years ago and it's great.

Would these normally be €700 odd? I thought these were normally around €350 odd anyhow.
    Where's the discount?

The terms normal price and sale are largely fictional terms in Irish retail. They manipulate the prices so they can use the term sale most of the time.

Id just ignore that and compare prices with other bikes and NI shops based on the spec

Some decent looking Carrera bikes half price in Halfords. I was quoted a good few hundred to have me gears and crankshaft and all replaced, so thinking this is money better spent.

Its hardly apples for apples comparison, the cranksets and cassettes on those carrera bike would be under €50.

No they wouldn't, but they would be low in the range if parts you can get. The spec of those have gone waaaay down .

The other half bought the Subway hybrid from Halfords for my son before Christmas. It looks to have dropped by around 100 euro from the pre-Christmas price she paid. Doubt it will go any lower than the BA listing.

Yes they would on ebay, amazon, wollyhatshop to name a few. You can readily get the tourney, suntour cranksets for £20 or less and the cassettes for £12-£15. I paid £20 for a tourney crankset and cassette for my old bike on ebay. You'd get much better parts for not a lot more: http://www.woollyhatshop.com/chains-cassettes-crank-deals/cat_522.html
Spending €100 on parts for your old bike or spend €300 quid on a higherend secondhand bike is nearly always a better idea than spending €300 on a new bike as you'll end up with the same problems and parts wearing out in no time.
