I'm a man in my 30s , living in Waterford. I am very down about having very few friends and a non existent social life , I have a good job and I'm currently trying to make positive changes in my life by losing weight and I'm also hoping to meet someone soon , however I'm concerned that any girl that gets to know me may get bored very quickly because I don't do or meet up with many people at the weekend , don't get me wrong I have some friends but they live in another city so I don't have the opportunity to meet them every weekend , there doesn't seem to be a lot of clubs or social events here

I sympathise with you mate, it can be hard when you move away from where your friends are and try to make new ones. You are not alone; in this recession a lot of people have had to move to unfamiliar towns/cities because they need a job (any job).
I disagree with this bit though:
there doesn't seem to be a lot of clubs or social events here
I have never lived in Waterford but I doubt if it is as dead as you think. There are bound to be others living there in the same position as yourself. You might think "ah sure people down here have their own friends, they don't need me" but you are completley wrong there.
Have a look at the Waterford section on boards and see what's on.

Pfft, I know a lot of fellas who have girlfriends and they didn't/don't have many friends. Their girlfriend didn't say "He hasn't got many friends, he must be weird so I won't go out with him"
Granted, some girls may be like that but not all will be. If she likes you it won't bother her.

    Hey OP,

I'm in a very similar situation, I'm mid 30's and have a very quiet social life,I havent moved away anywhere, jut drifted away from the people I used to hang out with.
Other than going out with the people from work I wouldnt really go out at all to be honest!
It has often been a worry about meeting someone, when it comes time to open your life to them, how will they react when there isnt that much to actually share?

The only advice I can offer is that you try to grow your circle of friends, if that it what you want, maybe trying meetup.com for waterford. Im sure there is loads on. I'm hoping to start going to some events in Dublin this year.

It still wont magically makes things better with any partner, Im presuming it will be fairly obvious that they people you are introducing dont know you that well yet, but its a start. If she has an issue with it and also doesnt accept that you are making an effort then maybe "she" just isnt the right person for you.

Anyway, basically you arent alone, there are loads of people in similar circumstances, and its never to late to start changing things about your life that you are not happy with at the moment.

    Best of luck!
