I've always (last 12 years) charged time and half for New Years Eve gig,

Today was the 1st time venue owner questioned it..... We had previously discussed pricing with the other co owner, explaining the extra charge and we agreed on time and 1/4 instead, ring venue today and the other owner told me its ludicrous charging extra for new years eve....

What is the usual census out there>? are ye charging extra??

    Nice1 folks!!

Think he meant that the extra cost will probably be passed on to the punters.

A lot of venues are struggling to be fair. But the other side of the coin is that you miss out with your own family. I think it's justified to look for more. New years gigs are always extra late to finish and can get a bit messy when the beers fly at midnight. I don't do new years gigs because of that price down stuff and the messiness.

I'd be asking them if they're charging extra on the door/paying staff extra etc. Ludicrous m'balls.

Time and a quarter if you'll get home before 12. Double time if it's over midnight.

Yep, time and a half sounds about right. Its one of the toughest load ins and take downs of the year, people are drunk very early and therefore quite messy, venues are roasting, pressure is on everybody-not yer standard Friday night down the local and venue owners see the impact on the till receipts so why shouldn't the band get paid an extra cut? Personally I find it a very hard gig... would much rather be doing a wedding in a castle somewhere! Maybe next year :)

Well put AoifeCork. Problematic load in/outs are a pain. I used to say to owners; We play for nothing, you're actually paying us to haul the gear:

Getting there early enough to get suitable parking, keeping an eye on equipment during load-in/out. Loading out through a crowd of drunks. Pissing rain, dark carpark, car/van blocked by later arrivals, finding the boss to get paid. Ah yes the joys of giging!

And people think we love doing it and we'll do it for nothing...ah sure it beats cleaning toilets for a living :-)
