I'm getting a purebred labrador bitch pup soon . I've only ever had male dogs before. I'm worried about how to look after her. I will want a litter from her at some stage so don't want to get her spayed but am worried about how to keep other dogs away from her when she does get in heat. They won't be able to get into her kennel but I don't want to keep her locked up when I'm at work during those times. Do dog runs work or are they too insecure . Anyone know any good books about managing Labradors.

Unless you want to put a chastity belt on her you will have to keep her in a run a few weeks of the year. Might be once or twice.
My bitch was in heat recently & the dog would hardly eat in the run next door. I moved her into the furthest away run as she was doing everything bar twirling her knickers over her head driving him mad!
As regards insecure it depends on the run quality, your dogs incl the bitch to be & the neighbours daredevil terrier that would put a cat to shame climbing in over it so either roof it or run a strand of electric wire around the top of it to cure climbing!

Dog run is definitely the way to go. Youll know when she starts to bleed and when to watch her. You'll also know when u open the back door the neighbours collie won't be stuck in her! Have u a pup picked?

That's what I'm worried about. It's a farming area and there's dogs everywhere. I know simply keeping the gates shut won't be enough to keep them out. Do you think they could dig under the run? Most of the time she can wander around the garden with the gates shut. It's just for those few weeks I'm worried about. I don't have one picked. I'm promised 1st choice from the litter when the dog has pups. (600 euro)They will be black purebred hip scored vaccinated registered and microchipped. I really want to get a bitch but everyone is giving me horror stories about hordes of dogs decending on the house. I want to get as much information on taking care of her before she arrives

Put down a concrete base & buy decent panels bolted down- no dog will dig it. You only need a small run if a temporary thing. Could use some of that 600 quid & still get a top class pup. Too much money these days. 400 max for a pup of any breed! 600 is just profit making.
