Most spacious Family car

    Hi all,

need some advice on this one please.

At the moment we have a Seat leon, that just about suits (space wise) for my family, 2 little men (2 and 4), my wife and I. We travel once a month to the inlaws house which is a few hours away. travelling with 2 little lads takes a bit of extra luggage and space with baby car seats, and with a baby on the way for the middle of next year there will be no room for 3 baby seats in fhe back, let alone a boot full of extra gear.

We are looking for something with the extra space and comfort and safety for all along with good mpg, diesel.

Not too pushed about people carriers, would sooner stick with a saloon or even the Kia sportage, but that looks a tad small inside.

Thanks in advance for your help folks.

I'd be swinging towards the 2.0l. It's a big car to be lugging around, and you wan't a bit of poke. I've the older 1.8 engine, and that does the job fine.

Mondeo, massive boot . Make sure u get park sensors. A bit like parking a large van. Go for the hatchback version. 2 L diesel.

yeah, was just looking at them there, there's a massive boot for sure. Have parking sensors at the minute, so they'd definitely have to be on the next purchase. Those Titanium X models seem pretty well kitted out.

Titanium is the only way to go. Afaik they come with both front and rear sensors. Are you buying new? If not would importing be an option?

Won't be buying new. Was thinking of importing, but is there much to be saved in terms of having to register it here and all that goes with it?

You would save a bit, not a whole lot. The main benefit is a wider selection of the higher specs available. Don't go near anything without full service history, a lot of the english cars are ex-company cars, and so there should be no excuse for service history not bring up to date.

Volvo V70 was all the rage before the MPV fad.

If you want space, you won't beat a Skoda Superb

Like others have said the Skoda Superb is probably the car to look at, especially the estate version.

Taken literally, that couldn't be further from the truth :D

I've seen a few mondeos that im going to look at during the weekend. Thing is there's a few of them 1.6L. Has anyone driven both the 1.6 and 2L and seen a major difference in power between them?

I found the 1.6 a bit sluggish on take off, going up hills etc. Which is to be expected with a heavy car on a smaller engine.Motorways and such it was fine, enough power there for overtaking etc.
One thing though.I dont like mondeo's.I only rented mine and wouldn't buy one, not because they're bad cars, just because I think there are better out there to be had.The interior was the real killer for me, build quality didnt seem on par with others and the seats will have you begging for a chiropractor if you do any kind of a long journey.

    Superb would be my bet.

If you plan on buying new then I wouldn't buy a mondeo, they have poor resale values so you loose quite a lot, other than that great buy.

My dad who does 60k a year as a Sales Rep came out of a 2009 1.9tdi Superb and into a 13 1.6TDCi Mondeo and he really misses the Superb. While the Mondeo is perfect for his needs and is very spacious and has a bit more toys it really lacks in comfort in comparison to the Skoda. I know I'd rather have the Superb over anything else in that class anyway.

No. not for the 150hp model anyway. Not any usable power over the 2.0 125 and known inherent weaknesses

    Do you mean Titanium X?

    Yes there is a difference:

Zetec has electric windows alround, electric heated mirrors, cruise control, electric driver's seat, 16" alloy wheels, front heated windscreen, climate controlled air conditioning.

Titanium X adds half leather/half alcantara heated seats, electric folding mirrors with puddle lights, auto wipers, auto lights, auto dip rear view mirror, 17" alloy wheels, tyre pressure warning system, alarm, Ford Optitron information display, factory Bluetooth, cornering headlights.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,845 ✭✭✭Noccy_Mondy

Also Titanium X has a Sony 6cd Radio unit, start button, tinted blue windows all around, chrome under the side windows, silver plastic front grilles, and 2 cup holders in the rear armrest. Brushed metal radio surround aswell.
Also, an 8 way electrically adjustable drivers seat, and the Convers+ display system, which bazz26 mentioned

What would opinions be on the c-max or the kia ceed estate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Look at an altea xl too.
Ceed is a great car IMO. 1.6 Diesel engine is a cracker.
