Dpression - can I ask my GP for a referral to a Psyc?

I was diagnosed with depression last year and put on medication.

I'm female and in my 30s and have been to 3 counsellors over the years - all of them have 'worked' at the time, but I tend to sink into a very low mood very often and have to pick myself back up. I am sick of going to my gp, for another 'ailment' only to start crying while I'm there, telling them how sad I am etc.

I want to get to the bottom of this for once and for all as it is really affecting my life - is it as simple as asking my GP for a referral to a psychiatrist? I am sick of being fobbed off with medication and 'ah you'll be grand' type of attitude from my GP ( have been to three different doctors at the surgery, so it's not just the one gp with this attitude).

I know I am not the same as other people - I know I react differently to things and sink lower and lower and hide away from the world until that mood lifts. I don't want any medical advice - just advice on how to stand up to my doctor and tell him I want to be sent to see a specialist in mental health disorders. Btw, I am unemployed at the moment and on a medical card - I'm sure that will have some affect on my gps diagnosis.

OP, as giving Medical Advice is not permitted on Boards.ie I will lock your thread to save posters getting too deep into your issue and risk warnings or bans for offering you medical advice.

To answer your question, yes. Your GP can refer you to psychiatric services. Go and speak to them and be firm about what you want to happen next with your depression.
