Apologies for starting a new thread, but I have looked and serched for the mega thread but without luck.

Anyhow, I know the vans can catch speeders in any direction through camera in the back window driving towards it and away from it, but can they pick up your speed when driving towards the front of the van, and then take the pic when driving away from the back window, or is all the speed detection equipment pointing out the back window.

Also, can they park directly facing the traffic, ie, if you pass one on your side of the road can they park facing you, or do they have to park in the direction of the traffic for the side of the road they are parked on.

Very much doubt I have been caught, but have seen quite a few over the last couple of weeks, due to increased driving and more curious about them.

I dont think they have a camera in the front; as far as Im aware they can only record from the back.

I wouldnt have thought that it matters which side they park on if they can catch you driving both directions?

Oh I know it doesn't mater which side they park on, but does it have to be with the traffic flow.

In general terms? I dont think there is a law here that says cars must park in the direction of the traffic? I know that it was discussed in threads before, but provided they are not parked with their headlights shining directly into oncoming traffic then I dont think there is an issue.

I am, however, open to correction.

I always thought that at night, the more reflective end of the car (the back) had to face oncoming traffic.

I think it is the rule in UK (when parked), but not over here.

The van will always have the rear of the van facing oncoming traffic as the camera is on the drivers side of the back window and has to be nearest the road

Yep as others have said, Camera is in the back window of the van. It does measure speed of traffic going in both directions though... as I found out to my expense:rolleyes:

It does - how did you not notice the van facing you? Being caught after passing the van is kind of silly... Lesson learned i guess.
Not having a go at you, but seen few people in front of me going over the limit, passing the van and not slowing down (despite the friendly flashes we got miles before). Couldn't understand how they thought they would get away with it:confused:

Yep... hands up stupid on my part. I did think at the time that it didn't measure from the other direction...When I got that beautiful letter with a Harp on it from County Tipp I knew I was wrong:rolleyes:

I thought this until I saw one parked on the opposite side of the road against oncoming traffic. Made no difference to the vans operation.

Just means I got the on the lookout on both sides of the road for the crafty beggars now.

Slightly off topic apologies but I found out the hard way that in Oz police cars have radar built in and can ping you for speeding while behind you following and approaching you on opposite side of road ( on-coming)! Also discovered same day that over the holiday season penalty points are double....
Never caught speeding in my life and then a $300 fine and 4 points in middle of nowhere.
Not sure if Garda traffic corps have these or not. Certainly has me looking at my speed more so guess it works...
