Hi Guys, hope someone can help. I was backing my car into my driveway and the right back wheel seized up on me, i can't reverse at all and am afraid to go forwards in case i can't get back in and block up the road. I googled it and 2 answers came up, 1) the handbrake is stuck and 2) the brake shoes have stuck. My question is do i need a mechanic as i can't move the car and also is there anything i can to to free the wheel myself? It's a Renault Clio 2001.

Can you not even go forward a foot or 6 inches or so just to see?
Is the wheel def locked, there's nothing obstructing it otherwise?
Did you notice any unusual noises coming from the car today?

Just tried to go forward now and car won't move at all. I was out Sat morning and backing into my driveway when it happened and this morning it's stil the same. No unusual noises at all, no obstructions. Should i jack up the car and see if the wheel will move. I'm so sick of this car!!!!!
    Thanks for reply x

If you can move forward, I can't see how it wouldn't be able to go backwards (except if there was a reverse gear issue, or something wedged). If you can move it, drive around the block and into a big car park or something. Then you can give it a test without blocking anyone.

If it won't move under 60 odd horse power from the engine then you haven't much hope in turning it by hand :)

Are you parked on a hill/slope?

No i'm on a flat driveway. When i try to reverse it feels like the back of the car is lifting up as if there's something in the way even though there's nothing there.

Kind of odd that it seized up after driving though, it'd be one thing if it had been lying up a while

I'd say one of the friction pads on your brake shoes has come off and gotten wedged in the drum. Take off the wheel and the drum (you will need a hammer:P ) and have a look.

Just to add, you'd want to be fairly handy with cars doing that job

This happened to me op a few years ago on a megane. Wouldn't move at all. Tried rocking back and forth and also tried removing drum. Ended up getting it towed. Turned out brake shoe had collapsed and jammed. Unless you fairly handy I would suggest calling breakdown if you have it on your insurance.

Jack up effected wheel... Lower onto a skateboard and drive yourself to a main dealer right away before the rest if em seize up.
    Marty.

Hi all who replied to my question. I got someone to look at it and the brake shoe had come loose and got stuck in the wheel. He fixed it for me, wasn't too dear €80 and he did both back wheels so i'm mobile again lol for a little while anyway. I'm on the lookout for a new car, have 4K to spend and i'm looking for an 05 or 06, something small like a corsa or astra, nothing bigger than a 1.4. If anyone has any ideas please say as i'm useless when it comes to cars :)

well the brake shoe is a serviceable item and I wouldn't blame the car

for €4k along with you own you should get a nice yaris

we have 1 coming up on 200k miles and going like a clock
