    Sad news about schumacher.

Am I the only one that thinks it's weird how these people survive years of racing to end up like this through something simple.

    Such as McRae and Kuroi.

Exactly - and don't forget Bertie Fisher and Richard Burns fit on that list too.

When I heard the news about Schumacher earlier today, the vibe i got was that it wasn't too serious, so it was a bit of a surprise when I turned on Sky and they were speaking in fairly morbid tones.

I've been told that he was wearing a helmet but the impact must have been enough to do damage through that.

Apparently he was, and he was awake and stuff afterwards and it's only gotten worse in the last while, so as grim as it all looks I'm still hopeful he'l be ok

I had a much minor head injury when I fell off a horse and landed headfirst wearing a helmet years ago, got knocked out, got up fine, then a few hours later was in hospital barely aware of where I was, suffered severe concussion which lasted a few months!

Not unusual for head injuries to take time to present their full extent which is why if you are ever brought to hospital even with concussion they keep you in for 24 hours.

 that's insane! In fairness I hit my head while skating before and I was all over the place for a week afterwards, glad you're all good now though :)

So he does have a clot on the brain. His body temperature is being kept down to try to relieve the pressure.
He is still critical but as the doctors said, it realy is too soon to give a prognosis

Sky News still maintain that he is fighting for his life also.

They have removed the blood clot, but there was some damage to the brain. Seemly.

Wouldn't be like Sky to over dramatise things. No sirree!

Reminds me a lot of the Richard Hammond incident. Lets hope we get a similar outcome.

    This too shall pass.

Hopefully. Hammond's crash didn't require neuro surgery though did it?

    Update from FormulaSpy.com:

The facts we know from today's Statement from the hospital.

"For the moment we are not able to express ourselves in regards to Michael Schumacher's future.

"He's been given an artificial coma.

"His situation is considered to be critical.

"He was operated on only once.

"We're not able to speak about after-effects, just treatment. We're working hour-by-hour."

"When he arrived he had a serious brain injury and was in a coma," says the first speaker.

"He still remains in a critical condition."

"He was immediately operated on after the first scan."

"His condition is considered to be extremely serious and he's intensive care.

"We're working altogether day and night by his bedside but it's far too early in terms of prognosis.

    "His helmet did protect him."

Will it help that he was a sportsman?

    "Well, that's possible, yes."

He adds: "We are in contact with the family - his family are by his bedside.

"We don't intend to carry out a second operation - we don't feel it's necessary at the moment."

Horse riding and Skiing are 2 really deadly sports and claim so many lives each year, not something I will ever try.

And F1 is as safe as tiddlywinks :pac:

Last fatalities were almost 20years ago, not much in the way of serious injuries (Massa's accident was freak) Schumacher broke a leg, Hakkinen had a bad one but nothing major apart from those. Personally I'd take my chances in an F1 car before I'd tackle the pro level slopes

    Skiing/snow boarding is class.
I'd say more people die in car accidents every year than people that have died skiing in the past 20 years to be fair.

    Well off the top of my head;

Liam Neeson's wife died from a skiing accident and Sonny Bono.

Also Christopher Reeve was paralysed from a Horse riding accident.

There's a good vid 'The crash Reel' which was on TV recently and was on you tube too but seems to be gone now - its an in depth documentary on the recovery process of the snowboarder Kevin Pearce who received a serious head injury in one of his competitions - or perhaps training for same.

I was not a big fan of shumi during his F1 days but hope he recovers fully - I am sure if he was incapacitated in any way afterwards it would kill him anyway

Its a great way to get a few months off work though - go on a skiing holiday break something and sit back for a while when you get back. Some at my job had it down to a fine art.

My point still stands, how many people died in cars off the too of your head. :p

I've always been into extreme sports to be fair so skiing has never seemed too crazy to me.

    Some good news...
FORMER Formula One star Michael Schumacher is no longer in a coma, and has left hospital after the skiing accident that almost killed him.

What condition is he in is the real question. Don't think any newspapers was able to tell yet?
    Any pictures?

I'd read something conflicting this only yesterday - I'll try route out a source. It was on the daily mail so I wouldn't have much hope for it anyway. There's been a lot of conflicting stories about this from day one.
