Lumia 1020 update?

Just wondering if there are any plans for Nokia to update or release a new version of the Lumia 1020?

I'm thinking about upgrading in a few months time in the hope that I can ditch my separate digital cameras for good. However I think the 1020 may be a bit bulky so I suppose I was wondering if Nokia are planning an update to it or a new version that is a bit smaller/lighter etc?

I'd say its likely there will be a direct update to the 1020 (possibly called the 1025) as it is the Nokia imaging flagship smartphone. Typically you would see such an announcement 6 - 8 months after the original model launches, with availability perhaps another month later. The unknown in this case though is that the next major line of Nokia phones may not even be called Nokia phones (perhaps Microsoft or Surface phones) and more likely still Microsoft / Nokia will launch alongside the big WP 8.1 update. This update is slated for late spring / early summer 2014. So that's when I'd estimate we'll see the 1020 successor! I'm using a 920 that i got in December 2012 so I'm holding out for the next generation of 8.1 devices at around that time.

Unlikely, look at how long it took to go from their last "flagship" imaging camera to it's successor.

But how long between the 920 and the 925?

I'm not using that as a gauge (because I think it'd be quite stupid to do so) though :pac:

The 1020 is a niche product with a niche market, maybe I'm wrong but I can't see nokia/MS bringing out a 1020 successor any time in the near future - and certainly not one that meets the OP's requirements due to that one vital piece of "bulky" hardware that will remain the same size - lenses can't/won't be shrunk, nor will sensor size, if they were...well you'd have the L925.

    Would it be?
It feels like the 925 was an attempt to be a standardised flagship lumia for the masses. Camera included.
So I imagine if the 1020 doesn't break the market as they hope, they may try to change it.

I'd imagine the L1020 has hit its niche market exactly as expected, it's a niche product aiming for a very specific share of the smartphone market.

I would second that - the Lumia 1020, even on contract, is a pricey phone - and it doesn't have quite the recognition the Galaxy S4 or iPhone 5s does.

Also, looking at 2 apps I have in the Irish market on Windows Phone, I see between 0.3% - 1.4% usage of the Lumia 1020.

As for the Lumia 925, it's simply an improved version of the Lumia 920 which was thicker and heavier than any phone at the time, definitely not a selling point nor an indication of Nokia's upgrade patterns.

And you may already know this, but the Lumia 520 is the most popular phone - usage on two of my apps is approx. 30% (next is the Lumia 800 with 15%, Lumia 820 with 9%).

In my mind there's different product lines here.

    1) N8, 808, 1020 (bigger sensor, Xenon Flash) (OIS 1020 only)
    2) 920, (smaller sensor, Led Flash, OIS) 925 (smaller version of 920)
    3) 520, 525, 620, 625, 720, 820

In my opinion, for most people the 925 is going to be good enough, that they'll stop using their point and shoot cameras. Some of us are doing that with phones with far less quality than the 925. The 1020 is better again. But its not as good as DSLR. Of course most people don't need or want a DSLR.

Its definitely debatable as to whether the lumia 925 was an improvement. Essentially it only got lighter but it also lost several features. It lost the build in wireless charging and the unibody construction. Id say the 920 is still the better phone.

    +1 on that.

It is time for an upgrade and I looked to either the 925 or 1020 with a view to retiring my point and click camera altogether.
The 1020 retains alot of what I liked about the 920 which was dropped for the 925 so that seems like the obvious choice. Even if I'm not an expert photographer.

Weight was generally the main criticism of the 920.
