the french government have just brought in 75% tax rate for top earning sports stars....not sure how much that will affaect the rugby stars on £500k a year .....what do you reckon?

It has to be added the french economy is in the toilet with unemployment still climbing to 11% and gdp down everywhere but paris and district.

From what I can gather from the article, it will only affect people earning 1 million or more a year, which no rugby player does (yet, at least), and that the upper tax bracket is to be funded by the employer, not the individual, so presumably the shortfall between the previous tax bracket and the new one. (possibly because tax appears to be retrospective for the tax year 2013 and players would have signed contracts unaware of this?).

It also appears it's only a short term measure (2 years), so may be scrapped after that period.

So sadly, no, this will not affect rugby or the exodus to France. :(

Even if it was permanent and for players earning over 500k p/a, as a progressive tax system, you would only pay tax at the higher rate for each euro paid above the 500k mark, and seeing as most players earn up to 500k as a max salary, most wouldn't even make it into that tax bracket anyway.

Over €1m per year, see the effects, otherwise, not significantly different from other Euro countries really.
