Hi lads , as I mentioned before I bought a English Setter pup. Pup is now 3 months and 3 weeks. I've been doing everything I was advised with this pup (i.e walking through a small field every day , Training him to the return whistle , introducing retrieving ) . So far everything has been going perfect! Today Ollie made a lovely retrieve in a field flooded , I was wondering how all yere Setters and Pointers are on retrieving?

At this point it would be a good idea to ease off on the training, you need to realize that your dealing with a pup and he's going to be a pup for the next couple of years. Keep it all play at this point.

when i got my pup i threw a sock and when i was comfortable she was picking it i was happy and put the retrieving to the back of my mind. i prefer to let pups find/hunt up dummies as opposed to constantly throwing them, stops them getting bored and keeps the head down or in the setters case up!

all my red setters retrieve land and water from they were 4 months old I started them on cold game once every few days snipe woodcock and when they older larger birds widgeon mallard and when they were 8 months pheasants never had a problem always kept game in the frezzer years ago I started a pup on dummies it took a long time for this dog to retrieve game when I used the present method I have never looked back ,setters are not like labs or springers they are not natural retrivers,I know people will say they have started their dogs on dummies and every thing was ok,but after going through a lot of setters in all my years of hunting the real thing never fails.

i agree black pearl once my pups would pick at a young age it was straight into the real thing when they got to an older age ,its a natural thing for them so they should run to it/hunt it and bring it back ,now this was the spaniels i know setters and pointers can be a different kettle of fish, i saw a video of a yank using a german pointer and he used food reward in the field when he brought back the phesant i know the purists dont agree with this method but if does the trick....what are yer views on it..

good video but be carefull with the tit bits if he retriveng without them don't bother but if he is abit akward use the reward but not all the time.
