Sourcing Parts

    Good evening all,

I have a 05 Opel Astra 1.4L 16V Club that recently had the engine light / lamp illuminate.

Someone had a look and reckons that that the oil pressure relief valve failed on a previous occasion which was subsequently replaced. However the result of that previous failure meant oil has apparently gone down into the "wiring loom" and "Engine Control Unit".

I am not very technical when it comes to cars so go slow and bear with me.

What am trying to do is source the parts myself and then get labor quotes.
However I am having difficulty sourcing them even from a source as reputable as
    micksgarage.ie

Would anyone be able to shed any light on how I might begin to determine exactly what I need by part number. All I have at the moment is the basic idea that I need wiring loom and a new ECU but isolating them online is proving difficult.

Questions? Please just ask me and I will try my best to answer them.

    Many thanks all,
    J

    That said..

I have run the old Accelerator and brake test which gives the fault code by way of flashing the lamp and it gives back P0136 which is the O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2)....I might give that a go first.

When you say "someone had a look" do you mean it's been to a garage and had some proper testing done or just someone had a look? I'm presuming someone had a look, otherwise you would'nt have to go looking for codes yourself.

Is it just the light on and no other symptoms or is the car a non runner?

    Any other codes stored?

Don't go throwing parts at it unless it's proven the parts are faulty.

It was a qualified person. But what worries me is no mention was made of the O2 sensor being a problem. He never mentioned the code to me. I found the code via my method. He seemed to concentrate on wanting to replace the wiring loom and ECU.

It is the light, the car seems to operate as normal. That was only code I could ascertain from the "brake and accelerator test".

Your mechanic may be spot on with his diagnosis, but appears did not communicate the details too well with you.

From here I can only make guesses, but before replacing any parts I would place a new separate earth on the o2 sensor heating circuit, clear the code and see what happens.

Might do nothing but worth a try.

    Hey dieselbug

I just sent you a PM.

I have been to see a few folks.

    In summary the following suggestions have been offered ;

    1. Replace wiring loom and replace ECU.

    2. Reprogram the ECU

    3. Replace the oxygen sensors and if that does not clear it is more than likely the catalytic converter.

Finding it very difficult to isolate the issue.

Do you have oil contamination in the loom and at the ecu plug?

I assume that is why you are being directed to replace these parts, if so oil will usually be visable at the b1s1 o2 sensor plug.

    Hi guys

Thank you all for your input. Turns out it was just the O2 sensor thankfully! We cleaned out the oil from the area and until it rears its ugly head I will keep driving her!!

    All the best

    John
