Flight numbers and call signs question

I thought they based the call sign on the flight no. with sometimes an alpha character replacing a numeric somewhere. As I look at Flightradar24 now the FR503 has a call sign of Ryanair 503, the EI433 is Shamrock 43R yet the FR172 is using Ryanair 300J and FR8012 is using Ryanair 240E. Can anyone one explain how call signs are decided upon or allocated?

As simple as the flight/trip number up to using a computer to choose them. Plus when choosing them they have to make sure to a point they don't match another airlines so that ATC instructions can't be picked up by the wrong aircraft

Some countries require that the callsign is the same as the flight number.
