Hi everyone I had an infected nerve removed on Christmas eve. The dentist was great she put an antibiotic dressing under a temporary filling and we are going to a root canal at a later date. She said she didn't think I would need antibiotics but gave me a five day course of amoxicillan in case i felt thethrovbing of an infection. What I failed to mention before leaving was that prior to coming in id already felt the infection move to my ear.I dismissed it as a shooting pain. On christmas day lunch time I was feelng an intense whooshing in my ears and dizzyness and tiredness. I decifed to start taking the antibiotics thinking the infectionhad spread to my ear. After three days of antibiotics and painkillers i was feeling much better vyt then for the past 18 hours i have an intesnse migraine accompanied by nausea and dizzyness. Could this be caused my the infection still being present, should I be concerned that the antibiotics are possibly not working ? Could the infection be spreading or is it just moving?

Infections don't usually jump from a tooth to your ear...

First thing, is your tooth infected?? The common signs and symptoms of this are pain on biting or tapping that tooth, a swelling or gum boil above the tooth on the gum, possibly spearing infection(large facial swelling). If you have none of these, it is unlikely to be acutely infected.

You may just have a toothache at present. The pulp/root canal material is most likely not fully removed at this stage and could be inflamed causing pain often radiating to the side of the face ear etc.... Is is worse with hot/cold etc, keeping you awake at night??

You may just be unlucky and have an ear infection/pain unrelated to your tooth, unlikely but it happens...

What pain killers are you taking, some cause nausea dizziness and migraines in some patients....

I had problems after a root canal with my sinuses - Ive posted about it here. Basically the chemicals they used to wash out the root canal got into my sinus cavity (presumably through the end of the root of the tooth) and caused a reaction that was similar to a sinus infection - dizziness, nausea, sinus pressure (bubbles bursting sensation), and painful ear popping. Blood came from my nose on the way home after the root canal too.

It wasnt actually an infection but sinus inflammation. Ended up in A&E and they said they see it all the time. The endodontist behaved like it was news to her when I mentioned it and claimed never to have heard of it. I have since mentioned it to my ENT (whose brother is an endodontist - coincidence) and he said that it can certainly happen as sometimes the roots of your top teeth will be inside or so close to the maxillary sinus that chemicals could leach through.

The op has not had a root canal treatment yet as far as I understand. Just an initial temporary dressing. Your own situation is not directly relevant to the op's IMO...

It was the nerve that was infected, the dentist removed the nerve irrigated a bit and put the dressing on. I have only one antibiotic left. The painkillers i was taking were tylex and ponstan but I ran out and am now only taking solpadene. The migraine started around the same time as i stopped taking the ponstan. I have also developed a slight temperature and pain at the back of my neck. :(

I am not experiencing any pain in the tooth but rather in my lower jaw under the tooth where theaffected nerve was removed and also tingling numbness in my cheek and lip of the same side. ( a syptom i have had also prior to going to the dentist)

I spoke to my dentist today she also said with the treatment i had it would be extremely unlikely the infection would have spead to that extent and reckons i picked up the flu very bad luck. Explains why the last couple of days of antibiotics did nothing. Thanks all for the replies
