Think I put my foot in it

Oh dear...I think I put my foot in it today. I was getting a beauty treatment done at my regular place where I've been going for the last year. One of the girls there is pregnant and due early next year and while we were making small talk in the reception area (with her colleague standing next to us helping another customer), she told me she was leaving for good when she goes on maternity. I asked if that was OK and she said 'yea it's grand, they have to give me maternity'. When I was leaving after my treatment, both girls were in the reception and I made a comment about being sad that the pregnant girl was leaving. Her colleague looked shocked and I realised she probably didn't know...I feel awful because I didn't realise the information wasn't supposed to be shared...why would anyone tell a random customer something they hadn't told their colleagues? Surely you just wouldn't say anything? And the other girl was standing right next to her and could easily have overheard her telling me.

I feel really awful now and hope I haven't caused any trouble. I'd never have said anything if I'd been told it was a secret...with this kind of thing, I generally assume it's common knowledge unless told otherwise. Should I apologise?

No you have nothing to apologise for. Of course you would presume it was common knowledge if you were told.

This is generally the case. Completely normally for you to assume the other girls knew
